Default Show off your Cherry B&S guitars.

Just like the title says.

I am interested in the use of sustainable woods for guitars. A great deal of cherry is not only sustainable, but, local (USA). I have heard top tier luthiers report that cherry makes an excellent sounding guitar. The only problem with it, is that no one will buy it.

So, lets see your cherry b&s guitars.

Steve

Hope you're ready for an onslaught of Seagulls being posted. They pretty much own cedar/cherry! Sadly, I don't have one to post (yet!)

So, don't expect many posted pics. Which luthiers have you spoken to that are making cherry guitars? Just curious. I love the idea of sustainable woods.

I played one cherry Martin dread. Sounded a lot like great maple to me. But I don't own one.

My cedar/cherry Seagull is laminated cherry, so no big deal there. It is what it is.

Well, some familiar names from AGF are Bruce Sexauer and Charles Tauber.

For anyone who has read Tim Brookes' great book "Guitar, An American Life", you will know the Running Dog guitar he commissioned is a cherry b&s guitar.

This is my cherry baritone. I agree - cherry is a great sounding tonewood. I played a birdseye cherry guitar made by Ervin Somogyi that was stunning - visually and tone.

This is my classical guitar by luthier Peter Oberg. It has a Black Cherry back and laminated sides of Black Cherry (outside) and Port Orford Cedar (inside). The top is Western Red Cedar. This is a fantastic guitar that is responsive and capable of producing many sonic colors. I asked Peter to make me a guitar using woods that he had always wanted to use as a luthier, but conservative classical guitar playing clientele would be afraid to ask for.

Default My latest purchase.

About a week ago I was hanging out at my favorite guitar shop, and noticed they had a new Martin hanging on the wall.
It was the new Martin OMe Cherry.
Compared to the OMs and 000 martins, it didn't have the bass, midrange or the treble the others had, but it did have a sound that really grabbed my attention.
If you take all of the attributes that people mention when describing a great sounding guitar, this Martin fell short in all categories compared to the other OMs.
Yet its sound captivated me,,I wanted it bad.
I left the shop, and went home and retrieved a Taylor that I have had on the chopping block for a while and headed back to the store. They gave me more than what I was expecting for the Taylor, and I left with the Martin.
After a few evenings comparing it to my other OM sized guitars, I have decided that the new Martin has a somewhat compressed tone, that has a lot of overtones. Singe string picking, it is not as impressive as my other guitars, but when strummed the cords have a very thick complex sound,,,just shy of angels singing.
This one is a keeper. The only thing I don't like is the new style case it came in. I prefer the plain black cases martin has been using.
This one looks like to old steal me Martin cases.

Sorry for the rambling post

Bill

I know John Kinnaird built a beautiful cherry guitar with a flowing grain pattern for one of our AGF members who I don't know wants to be named, but it was beautiful and sounded great like a Kinnaird guitar should.

I went back and found the thread, but unfortunately all the pics had been infected with the photobucket plague.

Martin OMC Cherry. Dry (mahoganyish) tone, w/strong midrange. Great for fingerstyle.

Here's my 2016 Waterloo WL-S Deluxe, this guitar only comes this way. Perfectly book matched Cherry back and sides. I added the pickguard. One of my favorite guitars to play!

That's the same description I was about to write for my new Simon & Patrick Mini Jumbo. With cedar top and lam cherry B&S, it sings like a choir. More of a Martin-like sound than anything I've owned before, with less clarity and more overtones. That cedar/cherry combination seems to have a lot of fans hereabouts. Too bad they gave the cherry a boring brown finish, though, not a reddish one...
