I disagree and think that is bad advice to give people. Too much humidity can lead to swelling of the wood which is usually reversible. Drying leads to cracks and splits.

OK. I bought an acurite weather station and have it hung up next to my Taylor. So after having it there overnight I see a high humidity of 64% and a low of 45%. I will keep track of it over time. Does this sound reasonably safe?

I would not think twice if I had humidity in that range.

It is funny, I have found cheap electronic sensors and meters are getting more accurate. Maybe I am lucky.

I think you'll get a range of answers but most folks seem to settle on a range between 40 and 55%. For my own creature comfort, I keep the house at 40 - 45%. At 64%, you'll be growing gills and get the sudden urge to eat fish-food.

Well I don't know how accurate it is but that is what it says. Currently shows 53%. Sea food does sound good.

I just got my latest hygrometer from Amazon. It seems to be off, but at least this one can be calibrated. That makes me wonder though... Why don't they calibrate them at the factory?

This just in! Current humidity next to my Taylor. 50%. Good so far. I guess we will see what summer brings.

Not to be the party pooper, but you might want to check your hygrometer for accuracy. The one I just got is way off. I thought I'd be able to calibrate it, but adjusting the calibration isn't working.

Here's a link for calibrating:

My outside humidity reads at 53%.. When I google current humidity it says 67% at 5pm. So we have a work in progress here. But at least I should get a sense of when I need to send my guitars into the bunker.

Default humidity meters

We have 3 humidity meters. One moderately expensive one which hangs on the wall downstairs, a pretty cheap electronic one, and a tiny spring-loaded one bought for less than $2, delivered from Hong Kong. The el cheapo and the wall until always agree; the other one is usually 7 points lower. It is mostly ignored.

Here in the NE and using wood heat, I notice the humidity goes up and down during the day. Current weather and heating needs seem to be the variable factors. Regardless, we go down at night as the fogger in the attached greenhouse is turned off then, so all guitars go back in their cases unless it's relatively warm outside. At this time of year, the warmer days tend to be cloudy and moister.

Outdoor RH only applies if your humidity gauge (and guitar) is outside too. When the weather-guessers on TV - aka meteorologists - report RH for outdoors, it has relatively little to do with indoor RH in your house, unless your indoor temp is the same as outdoors and all of your windows are open. But you could place your hygrometer outdoors for a few days and check regularly against the official weather reports to get an idea of how accurate it is.

Sacramento should be a pretty guitar friendly environment, except for the hottest of summer days and the coldest of winter days. The official weather observation is usually somewhere associated with an airport. You would have a different reading if you are in a much different location, not near a river or the delta, etc.

My gauge has a wireless outdoor component. My current outside humidity is reading at 61%. Google says my local humidity is 67%.

It also has a daily high reading which pretty much matches Google. Just a way to test its accuracy.

I know my indoor humidity would be different. It currently reads at 51% indoors I hope Google does not know that. They know too much about me already.
