Destination Guitar Shops
I live in a small city. I suffer from envy of you folks in the biggest cities/music centers that have access to great guitar shops with enormous inventories of fine guitars (and cheap guitars for that matter).
I like travelling. And it has occurred to me that my next trip might just be to a place with a GREAT guitar shop. So have at it people. Which guitar shops are really worth the trip? (I don't have many posts, but I have learned so much from this forum. I thought I was an oddball to love my guitar - short-scale, wide 1 7/8 nut, O-style,12-fret, slot-head, lightly braced - and I come here and find every other person in the world who shares my taste. Among others. I love it here and am grateful for everyone who posts such informative and roundly positive things here. You give me hope for a better internet world....) You got to go to Nashville! Gruhn, Cotton and Artisan Guitars just to name a few. You'll have so much fun you won't know which way to jump.

Near San Francisco, California, there's Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, perhaps a 45 minute drive south. In Santa Cruz, California, there's Sylvan Music.
In Seattle, there's Dusty Strings. In Kansas City, there are no particularly outstanding music stores in either KCMO or KCK, but just west of the KC Metro area is Mass Street Music in Lawrence, Kansas. It's a terrific store, and I make a point to always get out there whenever I'm back in KC visiting friends and family. In downtown Bozeman, Montana there is the Music Villa, which has by far and away the best selection of Gibson acoustic guitars that I've ever encountered in any music store. They've also got a good selection of Martins and also handbuilt luthier guitars. Hope this gives you some ideas... Wade Hampton Miller |

If you happen to make it to Sydney, Australia, try The Guitar Factory in Gladesville, and Sunburst Music, Coogee Beach.

In Toronto it's the Twelfth Fret. A true retail museum. A place where you could bump into past co-owner David Wren, inlay luthier extrodinare Grit Laskin and the elite in the Toronto music scene. A great place that ordered my Larrivee.

Dream Guitars
If you are in the Ashville, NC area checkout Dream Guitars. I think it is located outside of Ashville in Weaverville.

Dusty Springs in the Freemont section of Seattle. Friendly staff and they don't mind you playing their top of the line guitars.

New York City has Rudy's, Matt Umanov's, and Rivington Guitars in close proximity. A train/bus up to Albany will give you access to Capital Guitars (AGF Sponsor). NYC is also not too far from the New Jersey Guitar and Bass Center which sometimes has interesting stock.
Madison, WI has Madison Music and, an 60 minute drive east to Brookfield, will give you access to Redwood Acoustics and Cream City Music as well as one of the better GCs in the world. A 2 hour drive from Madison puts you in reach of Dave's Guitar Shop or Mountain Fret Works. Or, 2 hours from Brookfield, and you are in Chicago and its stores. In Atlanta, GA the go to store is Maple Street Guitars. They have a nice collection. I once had a set up there. If you want to go international, London and Brighton have some wonderful stores, too.
