Default How Do You Know What You Know?

After a long hiatus, I finally got around to recording another Youtube video, another great song by Hugh Prestwood and as played by Michael Johnson on his "Moonlit Deja Vu" CD It took awhile to figure out what MJ was doing until I realized t was played in Dropped-D, after which everything fell into place.

Lovely playing - tone and sensitivity, but you seemed to be "squashing" your windpipe by looking down, and I couldn't see your chest move much - to fill your lungs.

Sadly I couldn't make out your lyrics.

Remember when you are performing you are singing to your audience not to yourself not he guitar.

Please do it again but sing to us.

Silly Moustache, your comments are on the mark and not "silly" for sure. I had some of the same thoughts after making the recording but didn't want to do yet another take!

While working on this song and another new one, I lapsed into the bad habit that my thespian mom always warned me about, that of whispering the vocals rather than using my full voice. As a result, my tone and volume have been shaky for a week or so while I work on repairing the damage. In addition, the song is at the low end of my range but the guitar doesn't sound as good further up the fingerboard. And then ... I could get a better recording if I amplified and/or recorded the guitar and vocals separately, something that at this point is too ambitious an undertaking for me.

All that said though, I do need to work on posture and keeping my head up. One more thing to think about and it makes me realize how much work great performers put into their work. I've seen Michael Johnson in concert three times and he is not only a great guitarist but also a great entertainer. And he makes it all look so easy!

So I'll just keep on working and learning. Thanks for the constructive comments!
