Maingard OM Build Thread

Schertler tuners I picked. Not well known in the US. My Maingard 000 has them. As good as any I've had. Smooth, precise. 1:18 turn ratio. Different look than Gotoh sealed or Waverly open gear. I like them.

All sounds great. Any thought to having front headstock be more wild/figured Brazilian or something similar? I love Marc's stash of that stuff!

You are also wanting 12 frets for this guitar? If so then technically it wont be an OM but rather an OOO with slightly smaller linternal volume...

Marc actually builds all his models with 12 fret option--OM and GC refer to width/depth body dimensions. I've actually played a Maingard 12 fret BRW GC before--it was that guitar that got me attracted to Marc's work in the first place.

Not exactly. His 000 has a lower bout of 15.125 inches. The OM is 15.75 inches. The GC is just a little over 16".

That's interesting - his OM isnt following the dimensions of a traditional OM at all but actually closer to a mini jumbo.

Making progress. The back is together and rough braces attached. Soundboard (European Spruce) is assembled and braced. Marc makes a very very thin top so the braces will remain quite tall. Of particular interest is the picture that shows him glueing the doubled sides together. This is a fairly common technique in classical guitars but I have never seen another steel string luthier do this (doesn't mean they don't). The effect is to prevent the energy imparted from plucking the string from vibrating the sides and thereby reducing the amplitude of the energy available for moving the soundboard.

This is becoming more common with some steel string builders. Off hand I can think of Michael Greenfield and Tim McKnight and I know I've read of a few others as well. Didn't know Marc had adopted the technique too. In any case, it looks like it's coming along great!

I've never played a Maingard but have read several interviews with him, and seen a fair number of his guitars. I love his spirit and attitude. He's a true creator, and seems deeply attuned to how things relate to each other -- from guitar features to the player to the world we live in. I'll never be able to afford a Maingard, but I really appreciate his work and am hppy for anyone who gets to collaborate with him on a build! And finally -- great choice on the 12-fret design. It's so easy to just go w/ 14, as so many do, but a great 12-fret is magical.

Actually the aomogyi om you owned previously wluld have had double sides. Ervin somogyi is in fact one of if not the steel stront luthier who is generally credited with popularising tbia technique for acoustic guitars.
