That would be wonderful. Will it feature a McKnight guitar, perhaps?

I should open the shop for a tour next week and let other people watch paint dry with us. I wonder if I can charge popcorn as admission fees?

I wish I could be there with you and Tim for this exciting portion of the build, but alas... work once again gets in the way.

My suggestion? Pop some popcorn, set up folding chairs and just drink in the rich ambience. Enjoy every moment of "The Dry." Which, I'm thinking is followed by sanding, another paint coat and more popcorn... repeated half a dozen times or more.

You and Tim have all the luck!

I would think with that much time on your hands, both of you could work on that duet for the McJam!

This part of the process actually fascinates me - and at the same time would frustrate me to no end. I marvel at the workmanship that Tim puts into the finer details and am blown away at how the finished product looks - but I know that it's not just this boring "home hum, I'm watching paint" dry thing either.

It's the waiting that's the hard part. I'm not talking about the "I can't wait until I can play it" type of patience that the prospective owners go through inasmuch as the person working on it doesn't want to stop just so that chemistry can do its job. It's really tempting to rush through these final stages and it takes a good bit of discipline just set a timer and walk away - knowing that otherwise you're going to have to break out the stripper and sandpaper.

Kurt knows what I'm talking about!

Oh, boy. I told Tim we should make plans for a duet. I do own a new instrument, but I'm not sure you all will be ready to listen to me tinker on it.
McJammers will more than likely master it by the end of the gathering. It might be about as exciting as watching us watch the paint dry. I can incorporate popcorn for the throng to drown out my playing. Rodger can remember early McJams when I supplied tons of popcorn in waist high bags.

Neil ~ Kurt definitely knows what you are talking about! I hope never to see another last minute situation like that again! YIKES

I'm guessing I was the only one in the shop or in all of Morrall who enjoyed that day. I had a blast, learned a lot (more than I wanted to know), and was grateful Tim allowed me to lend a hand. I came away with an even greater appreciation for what Tim and Mary do day-in and day-out ("good bit of discipline" and "workmanship" are understatements, and Neil knows this as well as anyone), especially when it comes to the dicey application of finish. Which might be a good question for Tim: Is this the stage when you feel as though you have the least control of the project, because of the dynamics involved?

Actually it takes a good amount of discipline to wait, which is difficult if one is impatient ... When I shoot my normal finish I set the timer for 1.5 hours between coats and that is manageable. My normal finish tacks up, or becomes dust free, in 10 minutes. When I have to wait two days betwixt coats of varnish, well that is another challenge. Varnish takes several hours to flow out and become "dust free" so we have to tip toe around the shop without stirring up any airborne dust. However, it does give us time to work on other builds in the interim with good time and [dust] management. I find it easier to shoot varnish before lunch or at the end of the day which mitigates airborne particulate movement. Off to the shop now to sand varnish between coats
