Have You Ever Seen A Gibson Mandolin Like This?
Its referred to as the "L'il Pup" and was made in 1929. It has what appears to be a prototype of the A5 Florentine body and a flowerpot inlaid F style headstock.
The unusual features are the two additional small soundholes and the unique fingerboard inlay. More rare than Loar signed F5's, it may be the only one built. |

"A5" and "Florentine" don't mix. The F style (with a scroll) is Florentine. That's a two-pointer. Gibson was certainly making A and F style mandos well before 1929. The extra f-holes are interesting.

Tell Gibson. That's what they called the 2 point A body with the F headstock.

A 2009 discussion of these (this?) from a mando site:
https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/s...t-Lil-Pup-quot PS - is it just the photo here, or does it look like the regular f-holes were cut using a template and the two upper ones were just kind of carved out freehand? Last edited by frankmcr; 01-23-2018 at 04:15 PM. |
