Default Drifting Clouds (Kishibe cover)

Played with a Guild D-120-ce, D'Addario EJ-16's on it.

Barry, this is one of the prettiest pieces I have heard you play. You make it sound easy and I'll bet it's not. And your recording quality is excellent on this one. Nice

Bob, thanks for listening and your kind comments. Truth be told, if I can play it, its easy,

This piece is actually easy, its just has a capo on the 9th fret so its a tough squeeze, but a cutaway makes it work for me.

Most of these Masaaki Kishibe tunes are what I call "two finger wonders." There are rarely any full chords. At the most there would be a three finger chord occasionally. Sometimes you'll get a three note fretted arpeggio that makes you hold down notes and lift a bit to play an open adjacent string as well so fat fingers like mine have to be careful.

The trick I found to playing these is getting the notes to ring out and not muting something before its time has run. Sometimes it takes a bit of patience to get it down but its doable.

For reference I think Woody Mann's Acoustic Blues Method is more difficult than these tunes.

Kishibe has faster paced (harder for me) stuff that I haven't learned yet, but I'm looking at. I'm just doing his easier, slower tunes right now. Most of his songs very melodic and capture my attention from start to finish.

Thanks for the info on the tune, Barry.

9th fret capo, wow! Is it in standard tuning?

I play a song by Mark Hanson that has the same kind of vibe, lots of arpeggio's and pedal tones, but without a moving melody line. These tunes are very soothing and a nice break from a steady diet of blues and rags!

Post some more when you can.

Hi Bob,

This tune is in CGDGAD. Here's another one of his tunes that I posted today, its in DADGAD. Here is the thread.

The tabs and guitarpro files for many of Kishibe's tunes are here. Just click on where it says "read the rest of this entry" to get access to the pdf of the notation/tab and GuitarPro file. He has about 60 songs on this website.

Many, if not all, of his songs are on Youtube, either played by him or covered by others. Most of his songs are in alternate tunings like the one above, DADGAD and DAF#AD. Those tunings allow the use of a lot of open strings in combination with only 1 or 2 fretted notes. Almost all of his tunes are played with a capo on 2 or higher.

Thanks Barry! Would Hana (Flower) be a good one to start with? (I'm new to alternate tunings).

That's a great tune, good place to start. "End of Summer Sea" is a bit easier, but Hana is my favorite.

Just wondering where to go to listen to his original stuff?

I have Amazon Prime and Unlimited Music, he doesn't seem to be on either (unless I am messing up the spelling or pronunciation of his name).

I'm guessing YouTube like everybody else, but most of my listening is in the car (XM radio or CD's) or via Amazon Echo (Alexa).
