Default Opinions on UA 4710 for drums?

Seems like a versatile unit in general for a small home studio. Anyone have experience with them?

Yes - used one on a session. Nice unit all around. Would definitely do the job. The knob to go between solid state & tube is a nice idea...but I only really liked it either fully solid state or fully tube. The in between sounds did little for my ears...and at that I preferred the solid state sound...especially for drums. Of course that could have been because of what I was recording.

If you're asking specifically for recording drums, I might also mention the API 3124. It's about $1100 more than the UA, but it's an API...so...you know...

And to further muddy the waters - I am a huge fan of the Metric Halo interfaces. I've used them for over a decade. A MIO 2882 (http://mhsecure.com/metric_halo/prod...ware/2882.html) makes a killer interface for a professional level studio...and for less than the UA unit goes for. I recorded the music to a couple very popular video games on one of those.

Hmm, I have an m-audio 1814 that works very well. Not sure what a new interface would do. I have a Focusrite ISA 421 as the actual sound card with 4 open slots for other pre's. Thinking the 4710 would give me 8 high res channels which ought to be enough for drums. Either that or 4 random 500 series, but I'm not sure if that's really ideal for drums. As well, it opens up paralysis by analysis...

Ain't that the truth

Yes 8 channels should be enough for drums, depending on the kit & style. I've definitely used more and I've used fewer.
