After trying to sort out our parents' and other late relatives stuff, my modified plan is to sell them all in a preemptive strike. I've found out how hard it is to try sorting out things that had great value to my relatives, but little or no value to me.

This plan will likely exclude the guitars I've made, and conversions I've done. I've given most of them away, but I'll probably still have my reso, a bluegrass banjo, three or four steel strings (J, 14-fret 00-42, Fat Jumbo named "Patches", 000-42S), and a couple of tenor banjos.

My extra-deluxe plan is to donate my instruments to something like the Wintergrass Instrument Raffle. It is such a blast to see someone who is interested enough to buy a ticket actually win one of these instruments, and appreciate it. The proceeds go to a good festival. Win-win.

If I can't get them to some enthusiast, the nephews will have to figure that out.

My two nephews, both of whom I taught to play and both of whom became pretty serious players. None of my stuff is worth mega $$$ so I doubt there will be much fighting over my sentimental treasures. Still I have to figure out who gets what I suppose. Luckily one gravitates towards a Fender sound and the other gravitates towards a Marshall sound and those are the biggest pieces of the puzzle. I've actually thought about this a few times, sigh.

Yeah, I picked up one of those little posters that says

My biggest fear when I die is my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her I paid for them.

A friend of my fathers' used to buy pieces of heavy equipment (bulldozers and stuff) and hide them all over the county, in the woods, in back lots, etc. so his wife wouldn't find out about them. I wonder what he admitted to paying for the pieces she did find out about? I wonder if she believed it?

You guys are funny

Default You can't take them with you - who gets all your guitars?

They'll be going to various family members. I'm relatively young, and though I've thought about this subject, I hopefully won't have to worry about it for 3-5 decades. And in the meantime, I'm sure things will change significantly.

actually, you can. just depends upon how many you have and how much room you'll have. people have been buried in their cars before.

i have a friend who just recently stated that he wanted his 53 deluxe buried with him. it's his so why not.

play music!

My vintage Southern Jumbo will go to my guitar playing nephew, since it's a guitar he adores. The rest will go to my wife, who also plays. She can do with them what she wants, and has a pretty good idea of their value in the event she wants to sell them.

One nephew has the surname Taylor so that's easy.
Another nephew is a brilliant guitarist/luthier/recording engineer/producer so he gets the rest.
