Still looks to me like there are rays present. It's apparent on the inside shots and since that is probably not sanded out real well and that it may be slightly off quarter they don't pop but I still think I can see them. But regardless I've got Cedar with rays as well but I've never seen cedar that light before.

So, once the sleuths have figured out what this mystery wood is, will knowing what wood it is somehow change the sound or something? It's a conifer: what else does one really need to know?

No, but it's a skill that will come useful to some of us, and probably repairers =)
