Default Stretching exercises for fretting hand?

My aging fingers don't like to spread out very far as some chords require. Anyone know some good exercises for gently increasing the hand span? I know you can practice playing some of those chords over and over again, and hope your fingers eventually spread out, but it requires straining, and maybe that's OK, but I don't think it's working very well for me.

The old, assign a finger to a fret, play one fret at a time, keeping down the previous finger as you proceed exercise is a good one.

Are you a "Tab" cat? here's what it looks like...

-1-2-3-4-3-2-1------------------------
--------------------1-2-3-4-3-2-1-----
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

and repeat on every string. Index finger plays 1st fret, middle plays second, etc.

After playing a note, leave the finger in place while moving up. So when you play that second fret note with your middle finger, the index is still in place at the first fret.

Dig?
