Question Retro Monels corrosion spots right out of the pack?

I just got an email from the tech who is setting up a new-to-me Eastman E6OM-LTD. I bought a set of Retro Monels to try, based on the feedback on AGF and asked him to put them on.

He tells me that the E (unwound) and B strings "have a few nasty corrosion spots as they came out of the pack". Has anyone had that experience?

I'm going to take them back to the store where I bought them to see if they will replace them. If they won't, does Martin have a replacement policy? D'Addario, sent me replacement strings with no need to return the originals when a couple of sets of EXP16s went dead after a week or so.

No issues so far.
I believe Martin will take care of it.

I've had that issue once with a pack of DR Rares, but never Martin Retros. On the Rares, a little 0000 steel wool took care of it in about five seconds.

Hi Barry. Unfortunately, in my experience this is not an infrequent occurrence. I have purchased maybe a half-dozen sets of strings (from various producers) that had corrosion spots on the unwound strings right out of the pack. Fortunately, the vendors have always provided replacements strings.

Martin replaced 2 packs of Retro strings for me a few months ago for this very reason.
I posted them back an unopened pack that I was 99% sure had the same problem - the Martin CS rep received them and passed them on to the 'string dept' - haven't heard anything else.

As Willie points out, you can remove that corrosion and they will play OK - which is exactly what I did when I 1st found it and those strings are still on a guitar.

Happened with the free set of Martin PBS I got with my 00-15m, B string only. They were a free throw in from the shop I got the guitar from, bothered me a bit but doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Never had it with D'addarios.

Yes it also has happened to me. I have not yet taken it up with Martin, I have a few more sets yet to open.

Exactly the same for me. I cleaned off the corrosion, and they played fine. We will see what happens with the 5 or 6 sets I have left.

I've noticed some freckles/corrosion on strings many times and other than observing, never gave it a second thought. Never noticed any bad tone, but then again, wasn't listening for it...

It's generous of the string manufacturers to send replacements for this; kudos to them!

The only times I have had this problem with corrosion on new strings are when I bought strings by mail and when I bought a whole bunch of packs to keep stockpiled. Now I just keep an extra pack in each guitar case and buy my strings fresh from a local store.

Default Corrosion

John Pearse had this problem and changed their packaging and the problem went away.

I've seen this on other string brands as well. It's more common with unsealed paper sleeves.

Default Similar experience with MFX130 Silk and Phosphor

I have had the same experience with the Martin MFX130 Silk and Phosphor flexible custom sets for my daughter's guitars. I bought a few sets as we live overseas and hard to find them...every pack the high E and B strings were covered with corrosion and rust spots. Is there some sort of online customer service for things like this with Martin?

I had corrosion on a 12-string set of DR strings.
Sent them an email with a picture attached.
They loved the fact I had a Guild.
They are the grand children of Alfred Dronge - founder of Guild.

Like John Pearse - they had improved/updated their packaging and they sent me a replacement set.
