My travel guitar by Kanilea
I had to post a photo of this little monster. This is an instrument made by Joe Souza, a great ukulele builder in Hawaii (I have 2 of his ukes also). This guitar is something that Joe and I talked about for a year or so and then he built this amazing creature: So...the particulars are:
Baritone Ukulele body, all very high figure koa, koa pegbead faceplate. 23.5 inch scale neck (mahogany). Curly maple binding on body, neck, bridge, and headstock. Gold Waverly tuners with ebony buttons. 1.875 inch fingerboard width. Tuned like a guitar with Hannabach 815 Super Hard Tension Classical strings. Ebony board and bridge. Joe titled this instrument a "G6". It is a great sounding little guitar, with SURPRISING bass response for a such a little body. Trebles are sweet and "bubbly" and visually, the thing is a knockout (I wish every instrument I owned had wood that was this beautiful). Jimmy

Yes, I am a lefty, as far as the sound of the Kanilea, it is terrific. The tone is very balanced, good volume but obviously it can't jump into a smack down with a normal guitar. Tonally, it's almost like a junior flamenco guitar, with that short, raspy attack that is typical of flamenco guitars. It plays very nicely, although it's a little strange holding it because of the small lower bout (under 11 inches), so your arm position is different from a regular guitar (there's no bout to drape your arm across). Because of the short scale and resultant low string tension, you can't drive it, the guitar is better with a soft touch. I find that if I've been playing steel string for a while, it's an adjustment to pull back the effort on your picking hand. An amazing thing about this guitar is how well it plays in tune, with a short (23.5") scale, you would think it would be a nightmare, intonation wise, but Joe did a great job with it. Also, harmonics are outstanding, which also seems weird to me, for whatever reason. All in all, it's a great little guitar and a wonderful piece of eye candy. Jimmy
