Not on your coast, but Tony Yamamoto makes great guitars and I think some are in your range. The videos in my sig feature one of his baritones.

Dave MacCubbin may be able to make something in your price range. In my book, he rates with the very best; I love the guitar of his that I have. For a year now since I got it, I haven't been able to set it down. Dave works just north of Baltimore and will be at Woodstock next weekend.

Dave Maccubbin may also have a number of guitars that you can play and see. He certainly is getting guitars ready for Woodstock, and 6-8 months ago he was having a one man show at Appalachian Bluegrass in Catonsville. Went there and played at least 1/2 dozen of his instruments. Wouldn't be surprised if you could find one or two for sale at that store (one of the nicer stores in the whole Baltimore-Washington area.

I really like the work of a local luthier named Eric Bashore (Danville, PA... not quite Maryland). I've been going to him for repairs and stuff and have gotten to play a few of his guitars. He's right around your price range. Check him out at http://www.bashoreguitars.com/

It seems that Webber and Halcyon guitars are very popular in that price range, too.

Contact David Webber directly, you might be happy you did. His guitars are great.

Default Tony Yamamoto

In my opinion (clearly)
Tony Y is the most talented, yet to break through, luthier in the country. His guitars are stunning both esthetically and tonally. No exaggeration...stunning. He is near your price range but not your zip code.
Do look him up though...stunning.

This is my bias. Loved my first so much, I've commissioned a second.
