I have just very recently discovered Stehr Guitars right here on AGF, and these guitar that I've seen here have surpassed what I had always visualized the "ultimate" guitar which was usually a Martin, and a few others. But these are hands down the most gorgeous guitars I have ever seen.
So all that being said I've have felt it would be an insult to even ask if they sound and play as good as they look, LOL. I guess it IS a reasonable question. Plus I've had a hidden fear that they look so good that surely that can't sound and play good TOO. But then on the other side of the coin I have to think 'how could they NOT sound great' as good as they look.
I haven't done a lot of searching posts from owners of these to hear what they say so I'm glad I ran upon your post.
This is on my bucket list. I understand that these are a custom "commission" type of deal and with the talent and skill Joel Stehr has I knew that I would have to get in line with a considerable wait time.
But still, this is definitely on
my bucket list. I pray this is something I can one day "check-off".

Chuck, every time I take my Stehr out of the case to play it I am amazed at just how good it sounds. It sounds better than it looks. About the only guitar that comes close is a Taylor BTO I had. Seriously, the man builds ridiculously wonderful guitars.

I wish I had seen this post earlier. I was just in Vegas last weekend.

I can see it now. My wife asks me where we are going.
Me - "Some guy on the internets said I could play his Stehrs babe."
Her - "What the hell are you talking about."
Sometimes it feels like we speak different languages...

I, too am in love with the visual aspect of Stehr guitars. They are masterpieces. The fretboard on this one is my favorite part of the whole guitar! I have not had a chance to see or play one, but there is a great clip online that I would like to think represents his sound well. (At least what I would expect his others to sound like). If you go to guitargal.com and do a builder search for Stehr, they had a redwood-topped auditorium that sold. Even through my iPad speaker, the guitar sounds spectacular. I am fixing to listen with headphones. That guitar just rings in the video.

For those that have posted Stehr build threads, thank you very much. They are some of my favorites to follow.

There's another site, if you search for Your Perfect Guitar, that has a few clips. The guitars are truly excellent. And Joel is a true joy to work with. I strongly suggest if anyone is considering a build, that he be added to your list to speak with. Additionally, if anyone is near Long Island in NY, I'd also be happy to let you play mine.

Default whew!

i really should've kept up with my own thread. since my last post, i've moved from NY to Washington and Joel had the guitar shipped a week after I arrived.
as everyone has chimed in, the guitar grows in sound and exceeds my expectation each time i take it to play it. it's still a mystery how that happens.
i pick up my Eastman, love how amazing it is, then play the Stehr, get blown away, go back to my Eastman and now it sounds like a dud. go figure!

i should post my own pics of the guitar, but for now the first row of pics (by Joel) is of my guitar.

Wow - that turned out quite beautiful. I love the understated blocks at the side of the fretboard. Nice!
