Fascinating. Lloyd Loar got there 14 or 15 years earlier but never patented his invention; instead he got into a dispute with the other executives at Gibson over the electric guitar and wound up leaving the company.
Does anyone know when Les Paul took the magnetic cartridge out of his Victrola to amplify his own guitar on a homemade basis?

It's also Leo Fender's birthday (1909). Happy Birthday Leo!
