Default What has playing the guitar done for you?

I always say that if it wasn't for playing the guitar I probably would've wound up selling pinwheels and flags from one of those pushcarts by day and sleeping under bridges by night.

For me, music is not only the way I earn my living, but it is also an incredible and wonderful journey that I find endless joy in. It's the one thing that gets me out of bed each and every afternoon.

Playing the guitar brings me peace, joy and a reaffirmation of everything that is beautiful in life and this world. Music is my religion. It is the artistic representation of love. Without it the world would be a dark and depressing place. It's something that brings us all together.

Default Discipline

I thoroughly enjoy guitar, but I find joy other things as well. Learning the guitar has required a unique type of discipline that I find myself applying to other areas of life.

I was a poor kid from a bad neighborhood; an upbringing that could have very easily resulted in me being a sad statistic. I earned $3 on my first public gig at age 12. Playing guitar gave me a band that that showed me family values. Fed my young family when I went back to college (after quitting college first time around to go on the road with a band). Having booked gigs and coordinated schedules from my teens on, it gave me the drive to start my own first business by my mid-20s.

While playing guitar stopped being my source of income not long after that, it is the relaxation and peace I still turn to.

Much needed creative outlet. My life would be extremely stale and depressing without guitar and music.

It gives me something to look forward to every single day.

I always tell people, if you want to learn patience and humility, pick up a musical instrument and own an old motorcycle.

Happiness, comfort, creativity, a sense of accomplishment.

Guitar is a lifelong companion that we can all turn to in good times and bad. Play when you are happy and it keeps you happy. Play when you are sad or troubled and it lifts you up and gives you comfort, and before you know it you have a smile on your face.

In the darkest of times it's where you can turn off the world for a little while.

I can't imagine my life without it. Those who are not musical will never understand.

That pretty much nailed it Lee! For me, music is a constant in my life. I became a musician long before I became an electronics tech, engineer, senior reactor operator or husband and father. I'm in my early 50's now and so far have been spared arthritis. Of all my pursuits, music is the only thing I'm better at now than I was 20 years ago. I love making music with others, but I can also happily occupy myself alone playing one of my instruments. Its really meditation for me.
