Default Adding a K&K to an existing pre amp question?

I just purchased a very nice sound and great looking Washburn guitar.
It came with a USP and the Barn Door pre amp.

I'm not very fond of the sound of USP so I got to thinking about replacing it with a K&K.
If I do, could the K&K be wired to the existing pre amp?

I have never heard of anyone doing this but it seams like it should be an easy conversion.

Any thoughts?

It would be helpful to know the input impedance of the preamp that is in the Washburn.

How would I find this?
The battery is a 9 volt, if that helps.

With a K&K being a passive pick up, I didn't know that impedance would mater.
This is why I'm asking you folks that are in the know.

First you'd have to figure out what brand the preamp is - it's likely not a Washburn even if it's labeled as such. The 9v battery just powers the preamp, has nothing to do with it's working properties.

I thought about doing this with my Larrivee that has B-band electronics, but if I'm remembering correctly the B-band preamp was 100 mega ohm input and the K&K is 1 mega ohm out.

The experts will probably chime in here, but I'm pretty sure that's too far out of whack.

[Hi L20A

It's been done in this group numerous times with success. The people who tried it, did just that. They tried it, and it worked. It's a really easy experiment.

I'd not sweat impedance. It's going to either work and sound good or not work (in which case you either go without a preamp or you purchase an external one).

Try taking it by your guitar tech/local guitar dude/dudette and ask them - if they can do it. A lot of times the question of whether something can be done is better asked if it can be done where you are. Almost anything can be done in L.A., Chicago, New York..... but can it be done in Paducah or Paris (Texas)? Check with your person and see what they say.

Theoretically you could blend the two

The pre amp is a Barcus Berry with a built in tuner and 3 band eq. No serial number visible.

Hi L20A

If you have the skills to wire it in yourself, do so. If not, ask your tech to solder the leads together (matching the polarity of the preamp to the pickup).

Thanks for all the great advice.
I do have several great Techs in my area.
My play will be to use one of them.
The funny thing is that I will have to order the K&K as nobody in my area carries them.

Is there anything you particularly enjoy about the existing preamp? If not just solder the k&k directly to the output jack and run it through a preamp of your choice that may be better suited for handling the somewhat unique eq needs of the k&k.

I want to keep the barn door pre amp working.
I won't take it out so it might as well be used.
I also like the built in tuner that it has.
