Default Phase Switch - Black Angel, M1A, L1 Compact

It seems that the first thing 'they' tell you to do to combat feedback is
invert the phase. If so, then why do so few pickups and/or mixers have
phase switches?

The back-story.......
I joined the Bose L1C frenzy and got one a couple of days ago.

a) When I plug in my Goodall/Black Angel to input 2 Tonematch, all is fine
with correct phase though volume is lower even at 1:30 because it is
a passive pickup.

b) When I plug in my Goodall/M1A Active, I get feedback about 11:00 and
effectively the same overall volume as the BA. I feel stuck with no phase control in the chain to combat it.

c) When I plug my Martin GPCPA5 with the Fishman F1 Analog active, I
adjust the phase and get plenty of volume.

Example b transfers when you use the T1 or another mixer without phase control....just more devices but no phase switch. What am I missing?
What active pickups have a phase switch?

I do have a Venue and PADI that I use almost always; particularly since my
favorite pickup is the passive Black Angel. I picked up the M1A so
I can pop it into a guitar if I need to go straight to a mixer without
lugging a preamp./DI around.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

I have played a lot with the Tonematch. I always run my signal through a Headway preamp before running into the Tonematch. Think of the Tonematch as a big mixing desk and your preamp as the DI

I have the Fishman SA220. Basically the same unit with phase shifting, feedback control, reverb and phantom power on the front panel without the need for a remote panel like the Tonematch. It's why I selected it over the Bose.

I was trying to fathom the issues you're having re passive and active sources and decided to look up a possible cause. The Bose owner/reviewer at the bottom of the link below clearly states the Bose needs a strong signal in to get a strong signal out. This does not explain the Baggs problem you're having. It's odd that it isn't outputting. Battery okay?

The BA has a phase control feature but that only helps if your amp also has it. Then a second source can be added that does not have a phase control, like the Baggs, because the amp and 1st source (BA) can be matched to it via the phase controls they (separately) mount.

Not completely familiar with the Tonematch, I reviewed it online and can say I'm surprised that a phase control is not on the panel. Nor is it on the L1. Do these mount a phase control somewhere I'm not seeing? Very short-sighted if Bose did not provide that feature.

My Fishman is equipped with separate phase shifting switches, one for each channel, as well separate feedback rotary controls for each channel.

There's a decent article below regarding phase switching and how to check for out of phase conditions between two amps, or even two sources.

Good luck resolving your issue.

The Tonematch is a sophisticated piece of machinery and has the ParaEQ to combat feedback. You just have to play with it and find the frequency of your instrument's feedback.

The PADI and Venue both have phase buttons so at least you're covered there.

Thanks to all. I may have been unclear; I am trying to plug the guitar
directly into the Plug on the L1C base and get it to sound decent
without using my T1. I think it might be a nice feature for very small
outings. I can easily dial in great sound with my preamps and my T1.
Maybe I should reconcile myself that is what to do.

When I got the passive Black Angel, I reconciled myself to using a preamp/DI
to handle gain issues. I added an Active pickup to my arsenal thinking that I would not need a preamp. But now it seems I do need one to handle phase/feedback issues. With the T1 mixer, I can solve a lot of problems .
It just seems odd that there is no phase adjustment in the Bose chain
like there is in the Fishman SA220 mentioned above.
