Default recording set up... # stands for matched pair mics

Hi,

For those of you who use 2 microphones to record guitar - do you use 2 separate mic stands, or do you use 1 stand with a yoke?

For small mics I use a yoke. For large mics I use a pair of studio booms, unless there is a fixed rig that holds the mics properly for a particular pattern and requires only one stand.

Early on, I used a single stand but once I switched to two stands I found it much easier to get the mics where they needed to be. That stand that holds two mics is just collecting dust in a corner now.

After suffering from bass-boom sound hole effect, I found that spaced pair, by about three feet, is right for me. I was pleased at first that my sE8 pair came with a dual-mic bracket, but now I don’t use it because it’s only a foot long.

I used to use one stand with two SDC mics on a bar. But I eventually switched to two mics. I like the freedom of placement a little better.

I use a 2 mic yoke for SDCs unless I'm using larger mics of doing spaced pair configuration. This setup allows me to do anything, as well as having an LDC for vocal at the same time.

I use one stand for certain mic placement configurations (XY and ORTF) and two stands for other configurations.

Here's an example of the single stand and yoke in action: This is the vertically-oriented inverse ORTF array that I sometimes use. Yes, I use a protractor and ruler to get the angles (110') and distance (~6.69") right.

It would be harder with two stands.

This. I also have a short stand for situations where the guitarist is seated and the guitar mic(s) only need to be about 32" off the ground.

This is my approach as well with SDC mics. I like trying different mic placements but usually some form of near coincident, so use a bar.

On the other hand for LDC pairs separate is less cumbersome.

Currently using one stand and a stereo bar/yoke for spaced pair (which is what I pretty much have to do using my pair of AEA ribbons )
But still have not settled on a go to position

I am considering a second stand for mic'ing my wet/dry amps =electric set up

Spaced pair up and down

Spaced pair horizontal = out/wide

Spaced pair slight V

With 2 stands you can do anything one stand can do (with attachments) and more.

I'm using a yoke right now, but I have used two stands in the past.
