Default Latest innovation in guitar packing/shipping material

NONE!

OK...two bikini size plastic wrap bands and the shippers' label attached to the case handle. Essentially, this guitar was shipped to me in its TKL case.

Was there any damage? No, of course not. Guitars only get damaged when I ship to customers in a peanut-filled, 275# guitar boxes!

I had a similar experience...except it was a 1963 Gibson B45 12 string shipped to me in a much much older case.... I can't beleive the shipping companies accept this kind of thing?

Apparently Sobell ships his guitars in a Calton case wrapped in bubble wrap.

here's a photo from his website

That is truly a piss-poor packing job!

Glad it made it unscathed, nonetheless.

I thought I was the only one who had received a guitar like that.

A Classical guitar and its case survived such a trip TO me without a scratch, and I wondered out loud how a shipping company would accept that. Glad it worked out for you.

The shipping company will accept because if there is a problem, it's your' fault. You packed it.

Even if you pay them to pack the item, they will still refuse to cover shipping damage. That's just the way they fly.

I'm surprised the case didn't arrive with scuffs and/or rips in the tolex.

Perhaps since it is easy for the shipping "handlers" to recognize it as a guitar instead of a rectangular box, they take more care? Who can say?

This is true IF the handlers know how fragile guitars can be, and even then they may not care so much if the volume is heavy. At UPS I always take extra care when I see a guitar come through the system, but I can't guarantee my coworkers will do the same. I will say, though, that I've never seen a guitar shipped through our center in just the case, and in most handlers would probably prefer the case be in a box anyway. It just makes it easier to handle. It keeps it consistent with the rest of the volume AND we're encouraged to use two hands on each package and NOT use any handles that may be on the box/case because they tend to break easily. It's easier to get a good, firm hold on a rectangular box than on an odd-shaped case. Plus, they travel down the rollers and conveyors much easier without getting hung up on things.

Moral of the story, ALWAYS use a box to ship a guitar case.

Wow, Steve,

That is really interesting. I had heard PhotoMatt's story about receiving the classical guitar in its case prior to this, but ... wow ... It's sort of like, how would Alfred E Newman ship a guitar via UPS? "What, me worry?"
