Strumming is not to be sneezed at...
when it's done well.
I love Alejandro Escovedo's guitar playing in this video, and learned a lot by watching it. Essentially, he's just strumming, 2 and 3 chords with a little flatpicking. But it sounds so much richer than any strumming I've ever done because his right hand is used so well. Anyway, I thought so. And Five Hearts Breaking is fun to play. Thought I'd share it. And I don't know what that guitar is, but it sounds great through my headphones.

I love listening to Alejandro...the guy can play any style and has literally shared the stage with all the greats... I think he has what Rev Gary Davis called "a sporting right hand.." |

Yes, that Irish rhythm playing reminds me of Gypsy jazz rhythm, in that it doesn't seem like it should be so tough, but is!
"A sporting right hand" is a good description of Alejandro's. I gotta work on getting mine more sporty!

You're right. Strumming can be an art in itself and has a role in virtually any piece.

This was originally posted on the Acoustic Guitar Magazine website. Here's the link:
acousticguitar.com/acoustic-guitar-sessions-presents-alejandro-escovedo/ There's a comment by someone named Tony Nobles who said that he made the guitar, a custom J45 copy, for Alejandro out of salvaged 50's Gibson parts. The pick doesn't look that thick, maybe 1.00 or 1.25 mm? I like his use of dynamics too.
