Default MXL 900 or 9090, EV Cardinal, EV RE410 - anyone have experience or suggestions?

Hi - anybody with experience with these mics?

I already have the AT2020, AT2021 combo. I think I need another vocal mike for harmonies. MF has the MXL 900 or MXL9090, EV Cardinal and the EV RE410 for a deal but can't find any reviews.

... Or do you recommend I just get another AT2020/AT2021 set?

Audio Technica has discontinued the AT3035 and they're being blown out on Ebay for under $125. This is a great deal on a classic mic.

Multi pattern mics are a great tool. You can use them in many different ways. The CAD M179 gets a lot of positive comments and is very reasonable, especially here: http://www.frontendaudio.com/Product...oductCode=1637

Both of these have a bit lower self-noise than the mics you use now.

Thanks Fran - Can you help me understand a few things about specs in general?

For example - some people thinking having a range that goes low (like the CAD at 10hz) is actually a bad thing because it picks up things you wouldn't want like bumps etc. unless of course you are using it for kick drums which I didn't think you would want LDC's for. Other think it shows the range and sensitivity of the mic.

Many mics, like the CAD, have a "high pass filter" which is a funny audio engineer way of saying a low frequency rolloff. You can switch this in if you're having problems with excess bass.

With our marvelous digital recording systems you have very powerful EQ available to tailor the frequency response after you've cut the track.

LDCs are often used for kick drums - amazing old vintage $10K LDCs, in fact. LDCs are used for miking orchestras, doing overheads on drums, capturing pianos and guitars, every thing that can be recorded has been recorded well on LDCs.

SDCs are also used for everything. So are dynamics, so are ribbons, etc.

Here's a link to George Massenburg's site where he lists some mics used on a session: $10000 vintage LDs on kick drum and high hat and tenor sax, ribbons on electric guitar, trumpet, clarinet. His favorite overhead mics these days (I've read) are Sanken CU-44X dual diaphragm mics. When a friend and I compared a pair of these to Schoeps CMC641 SDs they were so close as to be indistinguishable.
