Would you be willing to share what the scale length and neck width are?

Hi Tom2,
The scale of my X7 Nylon is 24.9 and the nut width is 48mm. Barb |

That's the clever and unique feature that sets Irish building apart, Imperial lengths and metric widths.

Yep, it's good to be bilingual.

Thanks.
Crossover neck data is always helpful. |

For those who like inches: 48mm = 1.88967 inches. Or: 1 (and pretty close to) 7/8".

Or 1 57/64 inches, or such . . . .

The thing is, reducing neck width of a nylon string guitar from classical to crossover dimensions is such a close shave, these minor differences actually matter. 48mm is noticeably more comfortable than 1 7/8".

Tom2;
Well, maybe more comfortable for you. I rather like 1 7/8". When you work toward that sweet spot, there is always some variance. But, as much as I like 1 7/8", 48mm may be the closest to a universal fit. I can live with that. |

The 48mm neck on my X7 Nylon is great in that there is space to fret each note without being cramped. Every time I play my Rainsong Nylon Parlor I feel like I am bumping into adjacent strings.

Yes, I'm going for the universal fit, with the idea that it may become a production model.
As I research crossovers on the net, if someone has a complaint about string spacing, the vast majority would like it to be wider. Personally, if my specs aren't adopted as a guideline for a production model and I go for a one-off custom, I would choose a nut width of 49mm. The standard neck width of a classical guitar is not a problem for me, and all I am really looking for is a rounder neck profile. So, do you actually prefer the nut spacing of the Rainsong over the Emerald? (edit: I just remembered that Rainsong isn't 1 7/8". It's 1 3/4") If so, is it because of easier grip or closer string spacing? Which crossovers have you used with a 1 7/8" nut? |

I had a 1 7/8" nut width on most of my previous wooden crossovers. I've had the same width on 3 Emeralds. My Blackbird Super OMN had a lesser nut width as does my Rainsong Parlor. I do not like the nut width on the parlor and, as you and Barb1 suggest, would prefer a bit more space. On the other hand, I like the neck shape of the Rainsong which is more rounded and thicker than the Emerald necks.
In my previous custom orders from Emerald I wanted a thin neck and high fret reach--and that's what I got, and that's what I liked, for a while. The RS Parlor led me to a thicker neck and a shorter scale length which will be manifest in my in-process custom Emerald nylon string electric guitar. I suppose the shorter scale goes against the prevailing long scale of electric guitars. While I like playing the higher frets I am not particular pleased with the sound, nor am I particular good at high fret play. I am hoping that the Emerald short scale will allow me to play somewhere between the 14th and 16th fret. |
