Default A review of the new Composite Acoustics OX

Goods things are happening in the world of acoustic guitars. Pick-ups, even inexpensive systems, are sounding better than ever. Personal PA’s have moved from “luggable” to downright easy to move around. And the number of high quality, great sounding instruments at “entry level” prices has never been higher.

This happy news is also true in the world of carbon fiber guitars. The overall build and sound quality of these new fangled six and twelve strings compete directly with the likes of Taylor and Martin. Now there is a full-length model in the Composite Acoustic line-up whose price can be called “entry level”… and it’s a great guitar.

I’m writing of the Composite Acoustics OX.

It’s an OM size, so it fits in your lap nicely without your shoulder whispering that you won’t be able to do this forever. No “belly sculpt”, instead they’ve rounded over every corner that sits up against you. The back and the neck are finished with satiny wax. Your hand falls easily to the first fret on a neck with a shape that’s a nice trade-off . The overall effect being a level of intimacy reserved for OO’s and parlor’s.

A medium-tight carbon fiber weave is exposed on the body and the headstock. No gloss anywhere. Hybrid open-back tuners help reduce weight. A medium sized center sound hole is surrounded by a silver-grey rosette. The guitar comes with strap pins and can be ordered with pick-ups. Simple dots are used as markers, and the fret-board is dressed fairly well considering the price of this guitar.

The sound of this very endearing instrument is warm and detailed and the most “traditional” of the carbon fiber OM sized guitars. The RainSong OM-1000 is more crystalline. The Blackbird Super OM has a sharper attack from a more dampened starting place, like a dread. The OX sound is relaxed and easy, with a little bit of harmonica-like metallic chime.

Barre chords come easily, the action is medium-low, the intonation is good, and access to the highest frets is superb. In short, this guitar is well thought-out, aimed near perfectly, and is going to sell like crazy.

PS: Thanks to MacNichol Guitars and Mandolins for the chance to demo this new guitar.

There are some pics and videos over in this forum. Look around. I don't know if Artisan will carry them.
