Default Jazz guitar in Manhattan in March

Making my yearly pilgrimage to The Explorers Club Annual Dinner in March, and wondering if you guys had any recommendations at which I could be reasonably assured to see some good jazz guitar. The last time I saw aforementioned in NYC was at The Iridium around 2002, when Les Paul was still the house talent.

Matthew,

Here are four other clubs to consider. You will need to call closer to the date to see who's playing. Some guitarists have regular gigs, but they also tour so its not a sure thing.

Mike Stern plays here regularly (enquire)

Jonathan Kreisberg (Wednesday) and Peter Mazza (Sunday)play here (enquire)

Howard Alden, Gene Bertoncini, Roni Ben-Hur play here (enquire)

Ron Affif gigs here on Mondays...

Find out where this guy is playing; took lessons from him back in the early-60's - not as widely known as he should be given his formidable chops, but a true "players' player":

It was a record called "Windows" by Jack Wilkins that called me to try to play jazz. At least that how I remember it 45 years later.

Thanks guys! Will let you know how it turns out. I go to this dinner each year and eat bugs for appetizers. Thought I'd get in some good music while I was at it, also visiting Larry Wexer.

This is the tune I referred to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k5SSdcAxqo

I just listened to it for the first time in many years and it is as good as I remember!

As far as catching a good show, it's of course largely dependent on your specific dates. In addition to what has already been mentioned, there are a lot of younger players on the scene in NY who are really extraordinary - e.g., Gilad Hekselman and Mike Moreno.

As far as Larry Wexer, he's a very nice and knowledgable guy. But note that some of his instruments are at his apartment and others at another location (at least last time I visited), so you may want to be clear about what you are most interested in trying out. Much of what he has are very expensive collectable pieces (e.g. D'Aquistos and D'Angelicos). Since he is by appointment only, I would personally be sensitive about taking his time unless he has something that may be of serious interest.

It's fine, he and I are friends, and I've bought instruments from him in the past including my '37 000-18 so he's usually pretty good about tolerating me. I think he also knows my price point and probably understands I'm not going to buy a 40k D'Aquisto but if it happens to be there at the same time I'm looking at a more relatively inexpensive instrument he hopefully won't kick me out of bed for eating crackers.

In that case I wouldn't hesitate to try a wide selection, including the D'Aquistos. And I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about the relative merits of the archtops you try out. In particular, I've always wondered how original D'Aquistos compare to the work of contemporary builders. I've heard some suggest that D'Aquisto's have some special magic - in the way that a Stradivarius does - that eludes other builders. Others seem to think that's bunk.

We're going to find out! The Ribbecke that he has looks great and is in my price range, but no pickup, which I suppose is an easily rectifiable issue.
