Ive never had the pleasure of hearing a guitar with a lutz top. How would it best be described? or where does it fall between what and what? Just curious

As I understand it Lutz is a cross between Sitka and Englemann. I think it sounds similar to European. Although he'll still build with anything you want, the Lutz is Mike's go to wood for his tops. I went with his recommendation.

Scott,
Lutz is a hybridization of Engelmann, Sitka and White Spruces. It can contain two or even all three species. There are only two loggers who have permits to cut the wood which is isolated to a very small growing region in the NW area of Canada. It is extremely stiff and equally resonant. IME it takes a while to break in similar to what you will find with Adi. Just keep in mind that your new guitar (as great as it will redoubtably sound) will sound the worst that it ever will You have some exciting changes to look forward to in the months and years ahead. Congrats.

I understand they tape off those areas that make up the neck joint with the body and the bridge and the board so as to have the finish not interfere with the vibration of the soundwaves that passes amongst and between them.

Was this tongue-in-cheek?

If not, no, the reason the areas get taped off is so that the joint fits properly. There is never a finish applied to an area where wood-to-wood contact is happening...areas such as the entire internal neck-joint (be it dovetail, or bolt-on/mortise-tenon).

Proper fit.

For the top-area where the bridge will be glued, well, it's so that there is no "finish" between the under-surface of the bridge and the top-wood. Gluing the bridge to a finished top is simply not done, as you would be gluing the bridge to the finish itself, which would not be very secure! Some builders apply finish to this area and then scrape it away, others tape off the bridge area on the top as Mr. Greenfield has done.

Heading up to Montreal tomorrow to pick up the guitar. Can't wait . Michael says it sounds pretty amazing. I'll post some pics when I get home and I hope to have some clips up asap.

Beautiful axe. Mike is a great builder too, so it should be a winner across the board.

Pictures! We need pictures!

Those were the only two I've seen so far. I'll take a few tomorrow and post them. Working this morning and heading out in a few hours - although as productive as I am, I might as well head up to Montreal for the morning and hit the casino .

O.k. - I've had the guitar for a few days now and it's absolutely wonderful. Here are a few pics. I'm heading into the studio over the next week or so and will put up some clips asap.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr. O.k., I give up. . . Could one of you tech savvy guys tell me how to post a picture? I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it.

Here's the URL for the pics. Thanks!

I've always been a fan of MRW. It's actually a two piece back, which I guess is pretty rare. Fun to look at fer sure .
