I like the mini-bevel. Very cool.

Does it have a builder or did it build itself?

I was wondering if someone was going to ask about it.

A very devious and scheming man named Rod Schenk sent me those pictures yesterday morning. About a month ago, he told me that he had finished designing his dreadnought (he had been mulling over it for about a year) and was already building a few. The plan was that I'd try them out at next year's NAMM or Healdsburg and probably order one. Well, he didn't tell me that he was building one of them for me.

Anyway, the specs ...
Adirondack Top
Honduras Mahogany Back and Sides
Ebony Binding
Macassar Ebony Micro Bevel
Rosewood Backplate
Gold Tuners
1 3/4" Nut
Mahogany Rosette

That is a great treat. I think we all dream of luthiers secretly building us awesome guitars :-). Did you play his guitars at Healdsburg?

I agree that the character of that Adi top really complements the overall look. But that wood used on the mahogany back is also really nice. It's not the type of figure that will jump out at you, but it seems like it will have a depth and complexity to its look when viewed close up.

Congratulations on a great looking guitar.

Yes, I played Rod's guitars at Healdsburg ... the Insignia was gorgeous. I've known Rod for a few years and he's built me a 12-string and a 6-string (both Mahogany/Carpathian Spruce FEs) ... the Mahogany is gorgeous ... no extravagant figure, but the silking is outrageous and the grain is really tight.

Anyway, I still can't believe I'll be getting a guitar within 24 hours ... but I also don't know how this guitar could be any better than the 6-string FE ...

Wowsers! I'd be jealous, but I got a Mahogany/Adi Ryan coming 'fore too long. Schenk's got a cutting edge design going there. BTW, I met Rod a few years ago when he was just setting up his shop (which was a part of the house he was building just then) in Silverdale, WA. I've played a couple of his guitars at Dusty Strings in Seattle. They make a nice sound! : )

I know you have a Ryan coming ... I've been following your thread on it.

It's kind of weird that Rod chose the same combination ... but maybe not. We've talked many times, and I've probably told him how I like Adirondack as a soundboard.

All I can say is that this is a complete surprise to me ... all I've seen are these pictures ... and I'm going to have it in my hands tomorrow ... I wonder how many times I'm going to be going to FedEx.com ...

I have to say that I do like the look of that unstained mahogany. Kevin gave me a choice as to whether to stain or not, and I went with the darkening mode. Yours looks really cool, and it works well with that particular top.
I'd love to have your impression of it's sound when it arrives.

Beautiful and it'll sound even better! The Adirondack top is cosmetically very similar to my recently-purchased Martin D-18GE. You're gonna love your new guitar!

Regards,

Rod and I also talked about whether or not to stain the Mahogany when we were going over the details on the 12-string. You can see it at http://stringsnthings.org/hsguitar/Notes/FE12note.html

We didn't with the 6-string since appointments were identical (except for number of strings and those things which needed to be changed because of it). You can see it (as well as some pictures of "The Twins" together) at http://stringsnthings.org/hsguitar/Notes/FE6note.html

The RD has different appointments ... but I'm glad he kept with the all wood theme .. at least I think he has ... I haven't seen the headstock yet ... well, it should be here within about 15 hours ...
