Somoygi students list?
Over the years many fine makers have come out of the Somoygi "stable." But how many? Can anyone come up with a list of makers who are or have been in the business after leaving?

These are the guys I know about, but I think there may be a few I'm missing. The family tree branches out, too. Some of them have or have had apprentices of their own.
Chris Morimoto Mario Beauregard Michi Matsuda Ray Kraut Jason Kostal Gustav Fredell Hiroshi Ogino Julian Gafney Leo Beundia Tom Sands |

geordie1,
Your list includes those who have served lengthy apprenticeships with Ervin which have spanned months or years. Ervin has also taught many of us through his week long and in depth voicing classes, lectures, books and personal consultations. Perhaps your list should specify which curriculum you are inquiring of? |

From Ervin's list, here's a compilation of those he lists as 'apprentices' (who, we assume, spent extended periods learning his methods), from earliest to latest. Their lutherie activities since leaving Somogyi are probably only a Google search away: Mario Beauregard (1998) Ken Oya Michihiro Matsuda Luis Fernandez de Cordoba Brent Stuntzner Hironari Ebata Raymond Kraut Chris Morimoto Mark Tripp Jason Kostal Gustav Fredell Hiroshi Ogino Leo Buendia Julian Gaffney Tom Sands (2015) |

Count me in as one of Ervin's voicing students. I'd be curious to discover how many of us are currently working at building.
And sadly, Gustav Fredell, who was one of Ervin's apprentices while I was there, is no longer with us. Steve denvirguitars.com |

I've only played four of the maker's guitars on the list and will soon play another two - all fantastic. Somogyi must be a great teacher and inspiration. Jonny Last edited by jonnymosco; 01-13-2017 at 02:56 PM. |

Was Michael Greenfield not a student with Mario?

Michi and Mario were apprentices together. I'm not 100% certain but I think Michael attended the voicing class, along with Kathy Wingert and Michael Bashkin, a year ahead of me. That was many years ago and my memory is not that accurate. It would be interesting to see a list of voicing class students too as I am sure that list is pretty extensive.

No doubt. I'd go so far as to say that taking Ervin's voicing class might be considered a professional qualification and a sort of 'rite of passage' for those wanting to pursue a career in lutherie.

So, which of these guys/gals were A+ students and which got a "gentleman's C"?
