If I was you, I would remove the sides off of the backs, get a sanding block and calipers and sand it evenly until you can see nothing but wood. If it's thick you can start with 80 to 100 grit, if it's thin use something finer. Judging by the looks of the sides, it's very, very thick.
Check for any sort of warping and check the joints integrity down the middle of the back. Is this to be your first build? You didn't make that clear. If so keep reading. Next do some reading. I'd get Cumpiano's book, it's a necessity. Essentially, you may have some nice wood there, but you have a LONG way to go and a lot to learn if this is your first project. I would actually recommend that you read up and then assemble a kit or build one from scratch before taking on a project like this. It's important to realize a few things: 1. this is not a cheap endeavor 2. a refurb like this, in many ways presents more problems than a scratch build If you think you are up to it, buy some books and read. Don't worry about buying more wood yet. Before you can do anything with wood, you will need several tools, and you have a lot to do to that box before you can add a top to that guitar right now anyways. Good luck. |

Joey, what your saying is so true, and this would be my first build..its been in the heat for along time and frankly, i feel deflated because i, realize the work.
I might just put it in a case and keep it cool for how ever long, it takes me to want to try and do something with it. Im no guitar builder, however i am a wood worker,so i know a little about wood. Thank you for your advice and i know if and when i decided to start..i know ill have my hands full...Cheers, Solo

Looks like a food server! I have never seen anything like it. Kinda reminds me of a story Danny from Blueberry Guitars tells of going to Bali and ask to be taken to the islands best wood worker. He gave him a deposit and asked for a guitar. Came back months later to a stunning hunk of wood that looked like a guitar but didn't play.
I would love to know the story on it. Ovation prototype ? |

Sorry, I didn't mean to discourage you. A little bit of warp is nothing a drum sander and some good mahogany braces can't fix. You are going to want to build a 15' radius arc into it anyways. But I digress.... Order Cumpiano's book here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...condition=used It's cheap, as in less than a Mr. Jackson, very interesting and it will give you all of the knowledge that you need to build a guitar from scratch. You should be able to figure out what to do with what you have. You can also always take that thing to your local luthier and have him take a look, give and estimate etc. It would certainly be an interesting project for someone, should you choose to forego it. Certainly one worth documenting as well. |

Thanks for the PM with some of the history. Did they indicate age or origin? Don't get me wrong. My questions are because I think its cool.
BTW Did I see you wipe water on the back? Don't. Use Napthia for checking out the wet look or cleaning the surface. Someone confirm this please. I am pretty sure Napthia is the same thing as lighter fluid. |
