Personally, I would contact Jim at Lil Dawg amps to see what he could build me in that price range. He builds great classic amps (mostly Fender) but others as well at reasonable prices. You can even save money by just buying a chassis build and then making your own 1x10 or 1x12 extension cab. Or you can just buy one.

Jim will build almost anything, is a great guy who is greatly respected, and you get something handwired. There is a lot of info about Jim over at the Telecaster forum, a place that obsesses over amps.

If you are not into that I'd go for the PRRI or 68 Custom Princeton. I like Vox as well but prefer Fender for most cleans.

Hi RP, if this is mostly for home use try and get an amp with low wattage so that you can take advantage of that great tube break up (assuming you go tube). The Blues Junior is a great amp but it's still so loud. I'm not sure what gets you those Fender cleans in a smaller ~5 watt amp.

I, too, like the Roland Cube amps. This summer I picked up a Roland Blues Cube Stage from Craigslist. One 12”. 0.5W, 15W, 40W, 60w . 30lbs. Sounds great!

Just as a clarification for the OP, the Roland Cube amps and the Roland Blues Cube amps are not the same things. That's not always clear in these discussions.

Roland and Boss seem to have an affinity for using the same or VERY similar designations for different products. Boss has made a GT-100 pedal for years, and now they refer to one of their Mustang amps as a "GT-100" model, so when someone just says GT-100 it's easy to misunderstand what they are referring to (as I demonstrated in a thread here a couple of days ago!)

This might sound dumb, but as one who plays in front of the amp, I find it difficult to use the Blues Jr's controls....

Any love for the Fender Hot Rods????

Bugera V55 - $449 street price, MF is having a 17% off sale as we speak (you might have to do this deal by phone), and for $800 you can afford both the V55 and the V22 for when you want to, um, scale it back a bit...

What's been your experience of reliability with the Bugeras????

Making the popcorn now!

Steve has talked about these amps in other threads and has indicated that they are bullet proof. I am paraphrasing and I hope he doesn’t mind. He said that he thinks the Bugera is pro quality equipment for amateur price. I have looked mine over closely. My education is electrical engineering and my electronics background goes back fifty years with troubleshooting and maintenance of tube based air defense missile systems. The wiring and construction is quite impressive given that this is an offshore item built for a price. I get the idea that Steve has hauled his V22 around extensively with no issues. Can’t wait to hear his first hand response.

I have a Bugera V22 and 12" Bugera extension cabinet to go with it, It'll fill up the room with sound. It's my favorite amp because it sounds so good !!

Doesn’t sound dumb at all, at least it doesn’t sound that way to me.

I set my amps next to me on my right so that I can reach the controls and let them face across in front of me. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with controls on the back.

The Bugera, or the “Buger” as I call it, is quite fun to diddle with because of the way the controls are used. There is a master, a presence and other controls which in combination with two different channels, a clean and a bright, offer an incredible number of sounds, clean, overdriven, reverb and so many variations. It seems much more versatile as far as sound variations than some more common amps such as a Twin Reverb.

Martin and I bought our V22’s about the same time based on what Steve was telling us. We are both quite pleased. My V22 even standing alone with no extension speaker fills a good sized room quite well.

It is. Especially if you can hook it up to a 2x12 cab or even 4x12.
