89 Strat?
How do you guys feel about the following deal? I've been searching high and low for a reasonably priced used American strat or tele. Everyone thinks a used American Standard should be a thousand dollars, but I just don't see it when a new one could be had for about 1150. My artificial high is around $750 but i told myself i might go to 800 for the right one.
Anyway, I found an '89 strat that is mint! In fact, it belongs to an older gentleman and it has sat in his closet for the better part of 20 years because he has two really high end guitars that get all his attention. This gentleman WILL NOT budge off 850, amd i am stuck at 800. BTW...pickups were upgraded to fender vintage reissue 57s. What do you think about the deal at 850? Is it worth it? Does it leave a slightly bad taste in your mouth when you have to spend slightly above intent? I am findng myself getting impatient b/c i've been trying to find one for 2 or 3 months. |

Do it. That's a good price, especially with the pups.

89 Strat?
I'd say go for it too! My American Standard is from '92 and is an excellent example (more than one guitar dealer/tech has remarked on it). '89 would have been not too long after the new management had restarted American production so there would be a lot of passion put into the building of it I would imagine!

I have an 89 strat that's still stock with the Gold Lace Sensor pickups. It sounds amazing with those pups. Too bad the gentleman replaced the Lace pickups with 57's as the Gold Lace pickups from then fetch alot of money. Lace changed the way they made them and now they are sot after. So in my humble opinion, tell the gentleman that he devalued the guitar by changing the pickups and that it would be worth even more with the original pickups.

Personally I never cared for the Lace pups. They sounded too pure to me. IMO those pups are an upgrade but it's not true to it's vintage I suppose.

The 89 standard Strat had Fender pickups stock. The Lace pickups were in the Strat Plus.-- Darwin

Not to be tough, but I would say pass and look for a used 2012 or later. I see 2012's for about $650.00 to $700.00 quite a bit. I had an '89 American Standard and it was nice, but nothing special. My 2012 is a great guitar top to bottom.

There are tons of Fenders to choose from so I would take my time and stay on point.

Too much money for a 25 year old factory guitar. As others have said, there are plenty of newer vintage American Standard Strats in your price range. Keep shopping...
