Hypothetical 5 piece band
If you could pull together a five piece band, and you had your choice of musicians and singers from all time, who would you choose? And why?
How about you? I hear you ask; Well, since you want to know: 1) Paul McCartney. He would play bass and sing. He would also have an active songwriting role ( excluding silly love songs ). I might let him play acoustic guitar sometimes, but I would be strict about when he's allowed to. On bass he has a blank cheque, but he has to use the Hofner. 2) Glen Campbell. Guitar and vocals. He is no songwriter so would be allowed nowhere near a pencil and paper. He would sing the lower vox and be complemented with Sir Paul's upper range. He could play acoustic whenever he wants, on condition that he drops the Ovations and switches to a half decent Gibson. I think a J 200 would suffice. 3) Drums are a tough one to decide ( after all they are ten- a- penny ) So it has to come down to personality, and the ability to fit in. So I choose Keith Moon. Minus the headphones and nudity. I like a percussionist to be humble and know his/her place; But they also have to hold influence and instinctively know the right tempo and ambience of a song. 4) Steve Winwood. For his keys ability mainly, and songwriting skills, but also as a guitar player and general all rounder. Modest and professional, he could easily hold his own in this ensemble. 5) Amy Winehouse. Songwriting and vocal skills. Feminity is also required in this group. Not a mamby-pamby supermodel type of woman, but a real musician with youth and vigour. Someone to keep the ol' fella's in the band moving in the right direction. She would be allowed water and food only. No drugs, no alcohol, and she has to get lots of sleep. If you can beat me in record sales and live audience, tell me your choice. |

AC/DC with Brian Johnson from around the Back In Black era. The tightest and hardest rocking band ever.
My job? I'll carry the money and watch the masters at work every night. Would your all star band want to follow them at a show? |

Bass - James Jamerson: Nobody could lay down a "pocket" groove like James, IMO he was/always will be the real "soul" of Motown
Drums - Mel Taylor: Arguably the most underrated/unheralded drummer of the rock era, the Ventures' versatile rhythm man had the formidable chops of the greatest jazz players with a driving rock sensibility Keyboards/vocals/songwriter - Stevie Wonder: 'nuff said Co-lead guitar/vocals/songwriter - Eric Clapton: The blues roots run deep enough that he'd be a real complement to both Stevie and James - and Mel could pull off Ginger's old Cream licks in his sleep Co-lead guitar/vocals - Susan Tedeschi: the lady's a formidable threat on two fronts - and IMO she'd bring the house down if she ever got into an extended duel with E.C.

I won't win a contest involving record sales, but this is a live acoustic band that would absolutely smoke.
Aoife O'Donovan: Lead vocals. If you haven't heard her sing, listen to Crooked Still. Tony Rice: Acoustic guitar and vocals. When Tony Rice was in his prime, his lead work, rhythm work and vocals were simply the best in bluegrass. Chris Thile: Mandolin and vocals. The preeminent mandolin player of my generation and a true prodigy. Edgar Meyer Double bass. A musician's musician who composes and performs on double bass in a variety of genres. Julian Lage: Guitar. I put a lot of thought into my fifth draft choice; I considered a variety of potential musicians on a variety of instruments including Bela Fleck on banjo, Mark O'Connor on fiddle and guitar (not simultaneously), Nat Smith or Rashad Eggleston on cello, but ultimately went with Lage because one, this is a guitar forum, two having two guitarists allows for more accompaniment (when one guitar is soloing, there is still a rhythm guitar) and three, Lage has played with Thile and they sound great together. This would be my dream alt bluegrass lineup.
