Default NGD - Taylor 712 ceN

This is a little bit of a repeat as I posted it in the general forum, but since it's a nylon string NGD I thought I would post here as well! I gig regularly with a Taylor 414 nylon FLTD (cedar/Tasmanian blackwood), but there was always something just a touch lacking in projection and bottom end. I was at Gryphon Strings a couple of months ago and picked up a 712 Nylon (12 fret) and knew I had to have it. Not sure if it's the new bracing on Taylors or just the fact that it's a 12 fret, but it's projection is incredible and it has that "warmth" I've been looking for.

So when I went to pick up the guitar, a lady from Gryphon Strings heard me playing and asked to shoot a short video, which I thought was very cool!

So here is the video and a picture of the Taylor 712 ceN, Westerrn Sunburst!

Default Very good!

Hi Mike,

Thank you for posting that. It's very helpful.

I'm considering a nylon. I like how the Taylor Nylons play, but, ask you said, I'm not crazy about how they sound. The best sounding one's I've heard are your's and a new 714ceN.

Two questions. Do you have a video of finger picking it?

I'm curious to know how it sounds there.

And, did you happen to play any other 712ceN and how does yours compare.

Thanks!

Derek

I played an 812 that sounded very similar and a 214 that was very good as well!

Here is a finger-style video. The room is a bit boomy.

Default Congrats!

Lodi55:

Congratulations on the new guitar. It looks super sweet.

I bought a NS72ce when they first came out and have loved it ever since...

Just a note though. I believe these guitars to be very sensitive to the strings you choose. It will completely change their tone...like completely.

I have landed on D Addario composite basses, very high tension and their carbon trebles in high tension. For many years I used the very high tension composites with the funky G string. Loved that combination until I tried the carbons...

Keep us posted (ha!).

Here is a clip I call "Amusing"

I had a NC32 for a short time. It was damaged and I was refurbishing it. Someone needed the neck for their very nice 712N that got damaged. I lost track of his project but it was not a fit, but the last I heard he adapted it (?).

Anyway, that experience really impressed me with the Taylor nylon crossovers.

This whole year, I've been taking a new approach to playing and been voraciously working on steel-string classical pieces.

Finally, I had a finger injury earlier this year which gave me an unwarranted arthritis scare.

Those three things combined have made me pretty much concluded that a Taylor nylon is in my future. My favorite guitar is my GC7 (basically a 712) so I would likely go that route in nylon.

I keep looking for one in every store I go into since I want to actually PLAY one in person, but no one seems to carry these.

Well, I love hearing others' stories as I cultivate a future case of GAS.

Default Thank you!

Hello Mike,

Thank you for the reply and posting the video! It sounds great, and the tune you wrote is cool. It's about the Hills of Montana? I was born in Montana.

It's looking like that model will be the one I go with in the not to distant future.

Thanks again,

Derek

I play 99% acoustically on my nylon string guitars.

The Taylors and the Yamaha crossovers are nice guitars IF you plug in and amplify them. I just don't like the sound out of them acoustically.

Just one person's opinion..

Hey Derek - No, its the Hills of Montara... I live in a small coastal town south of San Francisco. There is a beach nearby and a beautiful mountain that gives me endless inspiration!

I have played Taylor nylons for the last 10 years so I have been through the different iterations through the years. I also gig so I was never relying on the unplugged tone.

I think that the current 12-fretters with the Lutz Spruce have a tone and projection that is a pretty big departure from previous models. So give them a try if you have not already.

Of course, you may still not like the sound..

I tried them and still don't like the sound acoustically.

Right or wrong, my thought is that I can make almost any crappy acoustic guitar sound great with an amplifier. The trick is to have an acoustic guitar sound great as is.

For my ears & money, the Yamaha's & Taylor nylon don't sound too good when played unplugged.

Hi guys,

Lodi.. I assume the strings on it are the stock strings?

My thinking is that I could get a "real" classical, which, I know has a different, perhaps better sound. Yet, when I factor in playability, comfort to play, and amplified sound the scales tip back a little. That is especially so now that I'm 55+. Add to that the Lutz spruce sound improvement (IMO), especially in the 12th Fret version, the Taylor's do sound closer to a real classical than the previous versions of Taylor nylons. So I'm now tipping towards a Taylor nylon.

Any crappy guitar can sound good? Really?

I've played a ton of crappy guitars that, when amplified, sound like crappy guitars.

I agree with Lodi that:

"I've played a ton of crappy guitars that, when amplified, sound like crappy guitars."

Lodi: did you happen to compare the 714ceN with the 712ceN? If so what was the major difference? I played a 714ceN about a month ago. Right away I noticed that it sounded much better than other Taylor nylons I had played.

I did play a 714 and I thought the tone was very similar to the 712. I found the 712 to be a bit more comfortable.

Well my mama always told me "Son, if you ain't got nuthin nice to say, than don't say nuthin!". DK, I did follow your advice on the purchase of my Cordoba GK Pro and I'm enjoying that guitar a lot.
