I have tried the tape installation of a JJB in an inexpensive guitar that I thought might be worth being able to salvage the pickup some day (I bought the guitar for trips by air where it might get gate checked). The volume was at least 12 dB down and while it sounded OK, I don't think you would get any meaning full feedback on your placement choice given the weak signal. Also, the tape they have you use, 3M 467MP, is pretty tough stuff to deal with when you want to remove the pickup (and in my case re-install with cyanoacrylate glue).

Baggs makes an M1 and a M1A (active).
The M1 (not the M1 active) can either be installed or you can use the included 10' cable for no modifications. Inexpensive, temporary, and sounds fine... https://www.lrbaggs.com/pickups/m1-a...-guitar-pickup |

This thread is kind of gone off the rails of the crazy train. The OP has already indicated that is likely to go with a Rainsong with zero electronics and yet here we are talking about pickups and electronics, the pros and cons of each, who is done the installs and what not.
Just sayin'

There's a NGD right next to this that started half a year ago, it's already run about 7 pages and we haven't seen the bloody guitar yet. |

But the Baggs M1 is a completely noninvasive system!

K&K
simple no batteries Sound great can use external preamp if you want more you can install yourself if you're handy. hardest part is getting over drama of drilling the hole. But if the hole is already 1/2" you're golden. Best is superglue on bottom of bridge versus the stick'um that comes with it.

Just be a bit careful on tightening the pickup to the soundhole. It may leave a mark if you over tightened, from my personal experience. I believe Doug Young shared on this also.
Btw, are we off track too much from the tread starter's original intention? Haha. |

We're not off track, Jimmy. This is all potentially useful information for anyone interested in acoustic guitar electronics.

So the downside is that you really need to haul around extra boxes to make it work right, either an external preamp or at the minimum a DI box with ground lift. I have ended up having to mic the guitar before because the snake was too long even with a DI box and I have seen some pretty slick soundboards with built in pre-amp channels. A normal (non-passive) pick-up always works. Just plug and play, and a spare 9 volt fits in the accessory pocket of my case, my DI box doesn't really.

here is my Rainsong Shorty (more or less the same specs as the new CH-OM)
Pickup is a K&K pure mini, run through a DI box to the sound board. No excuses for my singing voice.

Thanks. Strings are Phosphor Bronze. Either Elixirs or EXP-16s. Not sure which was on it at the time.
