Saw B.O.C. last night....
While not a "fan" per sa, I grew up liking four of their major major songs: Don't Fear The Reaper, Burnin' For You, E.T.I. and Godzilla (with the latter two being favorites of mine to mess around with in my electric days.
We went to the county fair last night and they were playing the outdoor stadium in a free concert so I got to go in a see them for the first time. Dharma is still as good as ever. Everyone was. Even their vocals were good. A little too much old school guitar noodling/soloing and not enough melodic rhythm for my tastes but a well played show and I'm glad I got to see htme and finally see Godzilla live in concert after 30+ years.

That was my first ever rock concert, on a double bill with Foghat. I wanted to be sure I didn't miss any hot guitar licks so perched very close to one of the guitar speaker walls. I moved away pretty quickly, a bit dazed... I didn't have to worry, you could probably hear the guitars from a bathroom in the sub basement just fine.
Yes BOC did Godzilla with the giant monster coming out on tracks, breathing fire. |

I guess they do a lot of these free shows - saw them at the Boston Hatch Shell 2 summers ago. Lot of guitar wankering, for sure.

I saw basically everybody from '78 to '85. As a vendor at Candlestic, the Cow Palace, and Oakland Coliseum
BOC was always tight. But the biggest surprise was REO Speedwagon. Only knowing them from the radio, I was stunned when Gary Richrath walked out with what looked like a '59 Les Paul, plugged into Marshalls, and basically tore it up for the entire show. It was a very eye opening and educational evening. Never judge a band by its radio hits.

I would definitely go see BOC if given the chance. Not really a fan either but I'd go for sure.

Blue, as a hardcore Richrath fan, I can only agree!!
Gary was a very bad man, the things he did to a 50 watt top and a Paul ought not have been legal!: Last edited by BTF; 08-25-2015 at 05:24 PM. |

I believe in that video (and the one for 'Ridin the Storm Out') Gary is not playing a Paul, but his custom-made Worthington. Honestly, I think the Worthington trumped the Pauls for bottom-end drive.

When they played live, did they have enough cowbell? I don't want to waste a journey.

You guys are late comers to the world of the Blue Oyster Cult. You should listen to "Astronomy," "7 Screaming Diz-Busters," "Then Came The Last Days of May," "Hot Rails to Hell." Dominance and Submission," " Cities on Flame With Rick And Roll," "Flaming Telepaths," "Stairway to the Stars..."
"Thinking man's Heavy Metal." |
