I typically make some kind of simple wood rosette on my builds. I wanted to something a little different on this one. I wanted to keep this rosette kind of "woody" but with a little pop to it. So here is where I started..
and about 25 pieces of wood later, including Ziricote,,ebony, macassar ebony, cocobolo, cherry, spalted maple, and bloodwood. I ended up with this. I know, it looks like a mess, I was not sure this was going to work out or not but after cutting it out, adding some purfling, and gluing it in the top, I ended up with this. A little more clean up and the final result is this.. What do you think? Last edited by TEK; 07-07-2017 at 02:36 PM. |

Nice! Is there a term for that type of simple gradient? It looks like a sunset over the ocean.

I love the looks of everything! I've been following the build, since ziricote is one of my favorite woods. The sides in particular look so cool (the backs ALWAYS look great, sides don't always look as stunning as yours) and when I saw the rosette, wow! Most of the wood rosettes that I've seen seem to be more symmetrical, but I like your treatment with the light-to-dark transition. Great looking guitar, Travis. I will continue to follow along.

I am not sure there is an official term for it but I also called it a "sunset" rosette. Travis |

Thats pretty cool Travis. From looking at that wood stacked up in the other photo, I can only imagine the juggling act to cut it all in a circle like that. My hat is off to you "builder types" who can figure all of this out...heck, I wouldn't know where to start. So, I'll remain in the category of peeps who just enjoy looking at and drooling over nice work. Nice work Travis!

Great idea for the rosette. However when the neck is on, it will look more like a "sunrise" rosette opposed to a "sunset".

It was a pain getting it laid out to envision what it would look like. Once you start gluing it to a backing sheet it went pretty smooth. Quote:
I guess it all depends on weather you are facing east or west when looking at it. |

Time for some work on the top, I will be bracing this with Adi braces and I put a Maple bridge plate on it.
And of coarse no build thread would be complete without the pile of shavings picture Hopefully I should be able to close up the box soon, that is one of my favorite parts of the build. That and carving the neck, and installing the binding, and stringing it up for the first time and.... heck its all fun Last edited by TEK; 07-07-2017 at 02:38 PM. |

I think I will always have a pile of shavings when voicing a top. If you just glue pre shaped braces to a top, you are just building to spec. It is interesting to see the differences is feel, flex and sound of the top while shaving the braces. That pile of shavings is the difference between a handmade guitar and those "cookie cutter" builds. Travis |

I love the rosette, in today's age of fashion would that not be called an Ombre rosette? They are using that for hair color as well as paint on furniture, the gradual fading from dark to light.

I gotta admit I didn't know you could get your hair like that. Hey Tom, maybe a new look for you AND me is in order...maybe they would call us the "Hombres with the Ombres"

We have a closed box, I will be going with ebony binding on this one with black and maple purfling on the sides, back and top. I am also planning on some crossgrain cocobolo around the perimeter of the top.
