Default Blue Guitar

Not a blues guitar, just a blue guitar!

Hello everyone. I'm a new guitar player that recently purchased a guitar to try to learn with at home. However my 7 year old son has a strong interest in having his own. Being a 7 year old boy, he'd love a blue one! I don't mind spending a couple bucks on something for him that's decent (300 max).

But, it's gotta be blue. I'm thinking a 12-Fret Parlor guitar or 3/4 Size guitar would work well for him. But finding a blue one is proving to be difficult!

I think a little Gretsch Jim Dandy would be cool, but looks like I missed the boat on the blue model they have.

Are those Rogue Starter Acoustics worth a look at? At 50 bucks, it's attractive, but not if it'd prove to be impossible for him to learn on.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a smaller blue guitar that I might hunt down for my son?

Thanks very much for looking!

Ron

Given your budget, I would go a bit higher quality than a Rogue. I did a quick search on Sweetwater and this one looks like it would be good for a beginner to learn with.

Fender has a model - the MA-1 - that's a pretty decent little guitar. They made a blue version you can probably find somewhere. These should be under $150.

↑↑↑↑↑ I agree with this. ↑↑↑↑↑ I played (and gigged) with a similar Ibanez AEL jumbo for about 5 years, and it was a very, very, very nice instrument especially for its price - which was in the 300 bills range stated in the OP. Here it is (or was, actually - it was part of a trade that netted me my current Gibson):

At all times I will steer people that want interesting colors with high quality towards Ibanez. Well built, practical, and beautiful.

They look a mite large for a 7 year old...

This Yamaha may be an option. A thinner body and more standard nut width. I would think a dread size would be much to big for a 7 yo.

Here is another option:

You know - for a 7 yo., the Rogue might be just fine. Maybe take it to a tech to have it set up well. As he grows and shows continued interest you can always get a bigger/better guitar then. If you get something too big and hard to play, the less likely he will continue, and the more money you are out.

Stony River makes guitars in the $150 range that are great for kids and come in several colors including blue. I bought my Grand daughter a purple guitar that she loves. I'm getting my grand son a guitar next month but may pay a little more for a Samick @ $175. As far as I know Samick doesn't offer colors other than glass black.

A kid this age may beat up a guitar so all laminate is the way to go.

I've seen the Ibanez, and the shallow body would be good, just a little concerned about the large body size and longer scale length. I have a Breedlove Pursuit (in mahogany) and it just looks too big for him. I'd be concerned the Ibanez will be too.

That Fender looks promising though!

As we get closer to pulling the trigger on something, I'm going to bring him to Guitar Center and have him sit with something to see if it sits well with him.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.

Wow, a pile more messages while I was writing my follow up post and getting interrupted here at work! Pesky job.

Thanks for all the other replies as well. I'm less concerned about great tone and quality than I am about getting something that he wants - if he's not excited about it, he definitely won't want to play with it. And right now, blue is what will spark that interest haha

Again, thanks very much for taking the time to help me out fellas. I hope that making music is something else we can both enjoy together over the years.

I've done some reading about the Rogue guitars and seem many people say they're not bad for a beginner. I think the biggest thing I need to look out for is size. My boy is a big kid, but he's still only 7. I'm thinking a 3/4 size or parlor would be great. If we both enjoy the guitar journey, it'll be something we could take with us on vacation or day trips.

At least that's what I'm telling myself

I would take him with you to get his "buy in" and make sure the size you're thinking about fits him well.
