Default The recurring personal question: Collector or Player

This comes up for me periodically and it has once again. I'm cutting way back on guitars, and recently sold 4 in about 1.5 months.

I decided to take a break to not appear desperate on Ebay, because I'm not. I don't need cash (well we all do, I just don't need to convert guitars into cash), so I figured I'd take a couple months off.

The next guitar on the list was a 98 parker fly deluxe. I just found out that there will be no more USA made Parker flys.

So already it's a pre washburn model, and there will be no more USA made... The wee collector spirit inside me is making noises

I'll probably still sell/trade it, but it's funny how little it takes to push that collector button and make you reevaluate a plan you had developed.

Collector: Some who have an infatuation with the instrument as the greater joy to actually playing them. This is a case where viewsic preempts music.

Player: Some who have an infatuation with the sound of the instrument but don't necessarily find the greater joy in collecting them.

I doubt if you have the collection that Vince Gill has/had. He auctioned off a bunch of his guitars a couple of years ago.

I'm a player, but one with a streak of collector running through.

I don't actively seek out collector grade instruments, but I do keep an eye out for good deals on old guitars. Also, my wife is a die hard garage saler and she sends me photos of guitars and amps that she runs across. So far she's found me two old arch tops, a Regal and a Maybell.....a 1931 Martin 1-17.....a 1955 Kay jumbo.....two old banjos.....and a 1956 Epiphone Pacesetter amp. The most expensive piece was thirty bucks for the Martin.

I also enjoy reading about vintage stuff, but I'm only interested in instruments that I can take out and play. I'm not into museum pieces that I'd be afraid to even touch.

I'll admit I'm both a player and collector. Nothing valuable though.
