Default RIP Gord Downie (Tragically Hip)

http://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment...obit-1.4359906

A very unique artist has passed. He is survived by his wife and four adult children. Most fans have known that Gord had been suffering with incurable brain cancer, yet despite this, he carried on with projects including a farewell tour last summer where the last performance in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario, was broadcast live across Canada. A documentary film of the tour was also made and is actually in theatres now (at least in Canada).

I have been a big fan of The HIP. RIP Gord.

Rest in peace Gordie! You were surely special.

RIP Gord. You're a Canadian icon forever. I knew this was coming but I was shocked to read the news today ... thought he still had some months ahead of him.

There has been a recent thread on the General subforum about Robbie Robertson as a guitar player, and it was expressed that it is surprising among some Americans that he, as a (Native) Canadian (as were 3 of the other 4 members of The Band, Canadian), wrote so many songs that essentially created “Americana” as a music genre.

I only mention this here, because I find it interesting that as another Canadian, the same can be said of Gord Downie as an icon of “Canadiana” music.

Two very talented men having had such significant impact on popular music in both countries. Pretty impressive.

I'm too technically challenged to do it but if one of my Canadian compatriots could put up the Hip song about New Orleans Sinking so that our American friends might get a sense of a bit of our music. He was an icon for a lot of us Canucks.Thanks.

He was ahead by a century (my fave Hip song). We were given the gift of an extra year with him, well beyond his prognosis. And we and music are all the richer for having heard him.

Yep, and Gord sure accomplished a lot during this past year, including for some great causes. It must have been tough to push through...but he did.

Any word on whether that the Hip will release a live album based on their CBC commercial-free show earlier this year? That would be great. I still have it on PVR.

I haven’t heard anything about that Dru, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is at some point, especially with Gord now being gone. As I mentioned above, tomorrow evening @ 8 pm, the documentary film of last summer’s tour will be aired on CTV.

The Hip documentary film “Long Time Running” followed by a short documentary titled “Courage” just ended. WOW! Incredible! The Hip were an example of how bands should be as brothers in arms, demonstrably loving with each other, and their fans. What a long, great run they had. Bye Gordie,

I imagine that a lot of Canadian AGFers watched. If you were able to get it on TV or computer, did anyone else around the world see it?

I didn't. I spent Friday on a couple of business flights getting back home. Up too early and in bed too early.
