Very cool, I don't think I've ever seen a two-color bridge before, sapwood or other.

Thanks DCN...

I have been informed that Cigarfan and I will be sharing sister necks....both from the same piece of mahogony. This one will have a center lamination of Amazon rosewood to match the rosewood on the back with Wenge on the sides, not quite as wide as shown in the picture below....

So with the holidays over work has begun in earnest in Santa's southern workshop for 2017...

Below is the Amazon Rosewood center lamination being cleaned of some excessive oil prior to lamination, it is so pretty it seems a shame we won't get to see more of it:

This is the neck being glued up. If you notice in comparing with the mock up a couple of posts ago, we decided to add a couple of curly Maple laminates on each side of the A. rosewood just to frame it a little to make it stand out or add a little contrast. I really think it added quite a bit to the look...

Looking good, Tom--that rosewood is so killer!

I think the maple lams definitely added to the overall look of the neck.

Getting closer and closer...

Thanks Dennis and Kevin,

I really like the look as well. Give me a laminated neck any day for the looks as well as what I believe is an increase in strength over a solid neck to help prevent bowing and twisting. I think this one may need a little darkening when the time comes to give the mahogony a little extra something and to match the back a little more, but we will see what the guys think.

Default More work from today

Things are progressing well now:

Shaping of the soundport:

Shaping the binding of the soundport:

Gluing on the back: I think it is missing a transverse band at the lower bout, I hope it will be ok

Default Today's Update

The neck has been glued and released from its clamp captives:

The soundport in mostly finished state:

AND finally, the best shot of the day, Ryan filing the excess back wood to be flush with the sides, HOWEVER, note the jacket, the apron, and the hat...as a northerner, it is good to see those Texas boys experience a wee bit of the cold weather haha...shop a little cold today Ryan?????

It is cold. Right now it's literally freezing. Inside the shop it was a chilly 66 degrees which can necessitate some extra layers. However, most of my protection here is to ward off dust from certain rosewood species that I have become sensitized to. What is some rotting flesh compared to your joy when we're finished?

What the pic doesn't show is the heat lamp over Ryan's shoulder, and the tub of hot water he has his feet soaking in. When it does get cold in Texas, it doesn't fool around.

You guys need a heater. One lump of coal to keep the cold away sir. Maybe some gruel for supper.
I'm feeling it for Ryan.

Thanks John for the sympathy. Winter down here is the front line of the war over seasonality. Christmas Day was about 75, tomorrow about 35, next Thursday is forecasted 75 again. This see-saw of the elements will rock along into April. I remember Easter 10 years ago, it snowed. In East Texas.

It's only fitting in this picture I'm wearing my Wheaton College Science Station coat. It was given to me when I got to my geology field school in the middle of June in the Black Hills of South Dakota. At the time, a 90 degree day, I thought, "They could have given us something more useful." It turned out a couple days later it was 30 in the morning and 80 in the afternoon. That summer ranged from the 20's to 115. The only place I've been more erratic than the winters down here.

Yuck! I, for one, don't care for that kind of temp fluctuation. My body usually reacts with sore throat and the sniffles of some kind. But metro Washington, D.C. isn't much better. 22 degrees right now but expecting 60 next week. ooof! I feel for you guys Ryan.

Tom's guitar is looking really good!
