Need Help With CF Guitar Choice
I own all Taylor guitars at this time and have been thinking about taking the plunge into a carbon fiber guitar. I have narrowed down the choices to a Rainsong studio model (WS or OM) which leads me to my question. I love the size of the Grand Auditorium Taylors and want to get a Rainsong as close to the feeling of them. I know they are different animals but the 5 inch depth seems really deep amd the OM at 4.125 seems a little shallow. I know that everything can't be exactly as you want it but which model would be best in size to what I have now. There are no dealers around and I want to try my best to get the right one the first time.

I've got a S-OM1100N2 and will tell you that this instrument's depth of tone belies the depth of its box.

The size and depth of the WS can make you feel like as if you are playing a Taylor x16 and you are right probably because of the extra depth. Of course it has tone as big as x16 and they are on light gauge strings. Sustain is definitely a winner here.
As JR mentioned don't let the shallow depth of the OM fool you, the sound coming from the OMs are pretty incredible.

When I decided to buy a RainSong this past summer, my choice was between a WS and an OM (I had previously owned a RainSong Projection Series OM). I demo'd both of them on 2 occasions before making the plunge. I'm not a big guy so I love the size of the OM, it's such a comfy guitar, but the beefier low end that the extra depth of the WS gives was too much for me to pass up and I went with the WS1100N2 and have no regrets. The difference in sound was not great but it was definitely there, very similar to what I would hear when I would play a friends dread, I was always a bit jealous of the low end power and I felt the WS offered that over the OM.
I also have very small hands and was concerned about the N2 neck, it is beefier but I do like it and don't feel it's size has any negative effect on my playing, just feels bigger. |
