Oasis Humidifiers?
Hey all,
I have been using Oasis humidifiers in my acoustic guitars as well as in my mandolin cases for a few years now. I quite like them and really have no major complaints. With that said, I wanted to ask how people find them after a few years? When I first bought my Oasis humidifiers, the crystals would absorb the water (distilled) and fill the inside of the humidifier with a jelly looking substance. I read the manual and it said that whenever the humidifiers are not being used for an extended period (spring/summer), that the crystals should be poured out. I did this and bought replacement crystal kits. The problem is that whenever I add water, the crystals don't seem to absorb the water as fast as they used to or as much as they used to. In some cases the humidifier is only half full with jelly with the rest being straight water. I have used the measuring tool and made sure to put in enough but it doesn't seem to do anything. I also noticed that one of my case humidifiers is now leaking. I am just wondering if anyone has had any issues like this? |

There was some excellent info posted about this 2 days ago. I'm not going to retype it all but do a quick search and I'll bet you find it. It addresses all of this.

I got an Oasis OH1 about 3 - 4 years ago. I didn't know any better and at the end of the season, just threw it in a drawer to dry up. The crystals have been effective up 'till this year - when I filled it up, there is standing water at the top (about 1/8 inch). The OH1 does not leak
I checked the oasis website and had a few emails with Dave. These instructions were not in place when I first purchased the unit. Quote:
If you're having problems, send Dave an email (on the website). You'll get a prompt reply and good service.

All I had to do was copy and paste from the Oasis web site:
Humigel™ crystals are of critical importance for the successful use of our humidifiers. The ONLY reason for the use of the crystals is to reduce the risk of damage to your instrument from potential leaks. Humigel™ crystals are very hygroscopic and hold up to 400 times their weight in water. We add .3 cc’s of crystals prior to packaging. This is such a small quantity that you can barely see them at the bottom of the humidifier. The best way to tell if they are present is to shake the humidifier and hear them rattle around. .3 cc’s is the amount needed to turn the water into jelly. Unlike water, the jelly is semi-solid and will contain the water should the humidifier become damaged. With the crystals present, a damaged humidifier will become damp or have water spots but will not leak into you’re instrument. More than .3 cc’s of Humigel crystals will reduce the ability of the humidifier to function. When there are too many crystals, the water stays suspended in the crystals, and will not evaporate through the fabric of the humidifier, and cannot humidify your instrument. After initially filling your humidifier with distilled water wait 10 minutes. When you look into the humidifier, it should look like clear small curd cottage cheese. If it doesn’t look this way, and you have standing water, you need to get a Humigel™ refill kit and replace the crystals. Each kit holds 6-8 refills. As long as you reseal the small zip lock bag inside the kit and leave the desiccant bag in place, the kit will last a long time. Without resealing and the desiccant bag, the crystals cake up with water absorbed from the air. Most instruments only need seasonal humidification. Typically, the humidity drops in the fall and rises in the spring. When the spring arrives, we recommend that you remove the humidifier, wash all of the crystals out, and leave the cap loosely on the humidifier. If you do not remove the crystals and loosen the cap, the humidifier will shrink up, dry up and the crystals will stick together. In the fall, it is easy to damage the lining of the humidifier when trying to restore it to shape. The lining is only 1/1000th of an inch thick and can be damaged easily if it sticks to itself and the crystals, when the humidifier shrinks up and dries up if the lid is left on tight.

I too, also like and use the Oasis humidifier and have been using 2 of them since they became available.
If you have one that leaks, obviously it needs to be discarded. If you have one that still has water in it after a few minutes, you can try adding another scoop of crystals, or discard the contents, rinse and then refill with crystals. Are you using distilled water? Tap water contains minerals that can contaminate the membrane and lead to problems. |
