Default A peek inside my acoustic album being recorded - wish I could get this tone at home

I set up a keep camera in the isolation room at the studio when I was recording my album. Wish I could get this tone at home.

The album is available on iTunes and Amazon, and the tab/notation book is available on Amazon.

Album on iTunes --> https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/we...gs/id938948951

Album on Amazon --> http://www.amazon.com/We-Three-Kings...=David+DeLoach

Book on Amazon --> http://www.amazon.com/We-Three-Kings...=David+DeLoach

In addition to the tab and standard notation in the book I included chord frames showing the fingerings/voicings used throughout each arrangement...

David - Wow! Beautiful. Excellent playing and arranging. This is fireside, hot buttered rum music. Music of love. And you've put a lot of love into it. I'll need to order this one!

Wow. Phenomenal playing.

To your comment about recording tone, I'm interested in the mics and mic placement there. Do you know which mics those are? The placement is very interesting, with axes parallel to your soundboard as opposed to perpendicular. I'd love to know if those are figure-8 mics or mics that have a figure-8 option switched in.

Beautiful recording all around no matter what!

Sounds nice.

One more confirmation that hearing a recording played back does not tell you how a guitar sounds.

It gives you some ideas (certainly sets some outer boundaries) though you have to zero in on specific things to listen for. Of course the more well recorded and raw the recording the better. Also how a guitar records in itself is a big issue to a lot of us.

Very nice David. Sure you will have a terrific album put together when you are done.

Hey thanks so much guys! The positive feedback from you fellow AGF members really means a lot to me - I have a lot of respect for you guys on this forum.

PieterK, that was a pair of Shure KSM44A mics. One had the diaphragm pointed down to the floor, and the other had the diaphragm pointed up towards the ceiling. The engineer had me play a bit while he moved his head around in front of the guitar listening for the sweet spot where the tone was best. Then he put the mics there.

Howard Klepper, I asked the engineer, "What did you do to get that tone?" He said the EQ was almost flat and that it was basically the true sound of my guitar. He said using decent mics, having a good room, and good pre-amps also helped a lot. I don't recall the pre-amps he used, but he told me they were some old vintage tube pre-amps. Pretty sure he said he was using "one for the high and one for the low" although I'm not sure exactly what he meant by that - perhaps the 2 mics which were pointing up and down. Also, he recorded me to an old Studer A800 2" tape machine which he said helps to capture the warmth of the guitar. So I think my inability to capture tone like this at home may be more a factor of my limited recording gear and engineering skill sets than it is the sound of the guitar? I will say the little isolation room I was in didn't seem all that spectacular. It was small (around 10' x 7') with an 8' dropped ceiling. Hardwood floors with a small area rug. Drywall, a glass window, and a door to my right, foam in front of me and behind me, and a queen size mattress leaned up against the wall to my left. It also had an old Fender Rhodes stored in there (I set my laptop/camera on it) along with some other junk. It was very cramped feeling in there.

DanPanther, the CD is actually available now on Amazon and/or iTunes. The links are up there in my original post.

Thanks again everyone!
David
