Default 25 Guitar Lessons From Toby Walker

I got this pack and its a blast. I started off with "E Blues" and "Fingerpicking Blues in A." Both great blues numbers to get you going.

My email is already littered with garbage because sold my info.
Thanks.

Absolutely. I keep all my email lists to myself and only use them to let folks know if I'm playing in their area and a monthly Members Only newsletter.

Everything is 100% private and confidential.

Default 25 Guitar Lessons From Toby Walker

I am struggling with the A chord in "E Blues." Grabbing the high A on the fifth fret is doable but it's a stretch and what happens is my index finger cannot lay flat for the second fret partial barre, and my index finger crease lays right over the B string at the 2nd fret and never seems to ring clear. I tried capoing up a couple and it was a little better but I forced this for several minutes and now have a muscle spasm on the left trap

Toby,

Count me in too, although it'll probably be Thursday or Friday before I can sign up. Can I assume that these, like your others, will be links that we have continuous access to? I wish I had time to go through all of this material quickly, but I know it won't happen that way. As long as I can do them at my pace, I'm interested.

That's a very common problem for folks who have little or no experience with that form of the A chord which occurs frequently in blues. Most of the time this is due to a lack of strength and/or improper technique. However, to cover all the bases the first thing I would suggest is making sure your guitar is set up properly. Light gauge strings - 12 - also help.

Next, make sure your finger is absolutely FLAT across the strings, especially where it meets the 2nd string. You'd be surprised how many students aren't aware of this. Your finger should actually bend slightly inward at the first knuckle, almost like creating a 'valley' between your fingernail and the second knuckle.

The way you hold your neck will also affect your ability to properly form the chord. Make sure your applying a classical style as opposed to wrapping your hand around the neck like a baseball bat.

Practice just forming the A chord without the pinky at first, making sure that the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings are clear... don't worry about the first string, you can always add the pinky in later.

Finally, I would suggest practicing finger strengthening exercises that force you to use all four fingers. There are quite a few books out there that have these but I think in my next Members Only installment I'll provide a few.

As I said, this is a common problem among guitarists but one that is eventually overcome if you apply these suggestions.

Hi Kerbie,

Yes, all of these lessons are in the form of tab (pdf) and sound (mp3) files which you can download to your computer. The page will be up there for a long time with no end in sight so you can take you time to download them.
