Comfort.
Check out: www.mandolincafe.com Most mando's on the lower $$$ end are laminates and will sound o.k. for a while and will eventually go dead. With mandolins especially, you get what you pay for. pic. |

I got a Kentucky 630 a couple of years ago. With a good nut, tuners, bridge, and tailpiece I can't tell the difference between it and the Webers, Gibsons and such at the local high end acoustic stuff shop. It's all solid wood so it should age well. Not that I'm good enough to tell MUCH of a difference anyway But I'm pretty happy with the Kentucky. Try http://www.mandolincafe.com for more information. And http://www.folkofthewood.com not only has a bunch of information and pictures of the various models, they also have a very unique tradeup policy.

Eastman. I have a 605 (A style) which I got a year or so ago. They are great mandolins at great prices. Lots of good reviews over at mandolin cafe.

I bought my singing partner's Washburn. Solid carved maple top, lam. maple back & sides, gloss black finish, A shape with f-holes. She never used it, and paid $179 online plus $65 for a hardshell case, and was willing to let it go for $200 total.

Check out Mid-Missouri mandolins. They're very simple looking, but are relatively inexpensive and, most importantly, they sound great.
