Default Mold?

This all sounds great but do any of you have any concerns about mold or mildew?

I live East of Denver where it's normally VERY dry but have had some issues with the above when I try to extend my passive/sponge humidifying techniques.

My guitars are so far un-affected but the sponges get some black growing on them from time to time.

Thx,

Doug

Default exchange

I just exchange the sponges and the beads probably twice a year. No problems.

Great idea! Do you find that the soundhole humidifier stays put pretty well when moving the guitar around? We take ours all over the place and I'd be afraid of it sliding around and banging into the edge of the soundhole.

Default Sponge/Ziplock Question

Any more details on the basic sponge in the ziplock bag. Are you guys saying wet the sponge, wring it out so I remains damp but not wet, place in zip lock bag, completely seal/close bag and put in case vs guitar body. No holes in ziplock bag just using osmosis effects ? Any value in doing this with electrics as well ?

Thanks for a very informative and helpful thread. Sticky worthy in my opinion.

This entire thread is about not using a ziplock bag

Sorry about that, but still noticed some posters going the sponge/ziplock route, a simpler route than your excellent and also simple design. Just thought I keep it as simple as possible. Will search site for Ziploc/sponge details. Did not mean to offend.

Peace

John

Not finding much on ziplock technique and what I have uses holes in bag which seems risky to me, so now my curiosity is up. I'm not sure I'm seeing/understanding the purpose of the screw on top of the grommet. It looks like the grommet attaches to the strings. What purpose does the screw serve ? Why not just glue grommet to side of travel cylinder ?
Thanks
John

The grommet is flexible ribber and difficult to glue to hard plastic. If you can get an effectiv glue joint that would probably be even simpler.

OK, I really like this idea! I've had problems in my home keeping moisture in my Martin's case - nothing seems to work. This looks promising.

And, I'll probably put one in each of my humidors as well!

Default Will these work as dehumidifiers

Made some and they seems to be working fine. Have been reading elsewhere that some people dehumidify their cases. If the water beads were added without soaking in water, could this act as a dehumidifier ? Will the beads leach moisture from the air ? I guess I could leave some out and see for myself.

You know, I've wondered the same thing and I'm not really sure. I don't know how efficiently they absorb moisture from the air. To dehumidify, it might be simpler to just use some white rice - that's sort of the traditional solution.

Well, the wood burning fireplace is in full swing. Both my house hygrometers dipped to sub-35%RH. i am nervous when the air gets so dry my own skin gets crackly and brittle - I can only imagine what old dead wood goes through.

I've had my cases equipped and these for a week now and they are about 1/2-2/3 full still. The case humidity is holding steady at 54%

I'm very pleased with how these things are working to protect my guitars.
