K&K Powemix mini
hi folks, has anyone used a K&K Powermix Pure which includes an under the saddle piezo pickup plus an under the soundboard transducer. If so, is the under the saddle PU that much better than for example a Dtar wavelength or an LRBaggs element as they are promoted to be. thanks.

First of all, hello and welcome to the forum…noticed it's your first post. These don't sound all that great, are expensive, and the preamp is invasive and very large and to be accessible has to be mounted on the back of the guitar visible through the soundhole (and then you have an internal battery to concern yourself with). The couple I heard didn't last in the guitars they were installed in after the owners heard my K&K dual source (Pure Mini, internal mic and external preamps) through the same rigs at the same gigs. They sounded nothing like the 'element' instals I've heard, but then they didn't feedback like the elements either. Both owners/players had already determined that they pretty much were turning off the piezo (FanTaTtick) because undersaddle piezos sound like undersaddle piezos and they had thought the combo would make their guitars sound more like a guitar through a PA. What are you looking for in considering a pickup rig? |

thanks for responding. That's exactly what I was wondering. I'm always looking for the next big thing in pickups. I used a Baggs dual source with a Joe Mills mic for years and it worked pretty good and was consistent. Lately I have been using a Dtar system w/internal mic and UST and I think I like it a bit better. It seems I can use more mic with it without feedback which is a big problem when playing in a venue or especially a festival when they crank those subwoofers up.

I used a Baggs Dual source for 7 years and was looking for a Joe Mills mic (he'd stopped making them), and then I heard a guy play a high end Larrivee with a K&K passive plugged straight into an UltraSound AG-50 for a full concert, and his rig sounded as good as my Baggs Dual source with no preamp help. I shifted my thoughts in new directions and ultimately ended up with K&K Pure Mini + Internal mic through external preamps in all my acoustic guitar pickup rigs (where they have resided for over 12 years now). Not that I'm ignoring new developments, but I still have not heard anything with improvement that warrants my shifting my attention from my current setups. There is an aspect of If-I-throw-enoough-money-at-it-and-spend-enough-time-fiddling-with-it-I-can-make-it-better with most of the 'developments' and innovations I see. Just like Baggs attempt at an Sound Board Transducer (iBeam) while itself a failure led to better SBT pickups being introduced to the market, perhaps the Element which looked great on paper and is a welcome 'concept'…yet it doesn't actually work out that well for many players will spawn some new developments. I actually think the thing which improve all our tone/sound during live play is to only play in small lively rooms with a max of 5-8 people listening. Then we don't need amplification. |
