Nice to see your bracing Christian, have you got a few more styles of bracing in your kit? or is it just the two for Steel String.

Hey Jim,

I have a couple of variations of this bracing style, It all depends on the top wood chosen and its particular properties. So horses for courses and all that.

Cheers.

Christian.

Default I think so.

One of the big surprises when I played the 000 that Christian sent over was the big sound it produced. I'm beginning to suspect that the offset sound hole/bracing design is sonically superior, regardless of the woods used.

I don't think it guarantees a great guitar but I think it lays a solid foundation for one.

I know that sounds like heresy and most guitarists love the sound their chosen builder, but in this case I think it's true.

Default The arm rest is carved!

Christian has completed carving the puriri arm rest. Here it is:

The idea of the arm rest, as opposed to a bevel, is to keep the player's arm off the top of the guitar. If you've tried the popular John Pearse arm rest you already know that it definitely makes an improvement to the guitar's sound.

Hi Mostert,

Thanks for your feedback on the Koru, I've been racking my brain to figure out where that 02 was. I think it's in Auckland, If that's the case and you are around this coming weekend you must pop out to Albany Musicworks, I will be in store showcasing a few of my different models. The Kauri, Koru and Roreka.
would be great to meet you.

Cheers,

Christian.

Default More construction

I got a few more pics from Christian, the progress continues. It's not fast enough for me I am seriously starting to GAS for this guitar.

More work with puriri. The wood is grey when being worked but turns much more colorful after finishing.

Here's the bridge roughly cut:

Shaping the bridge:

On the body side the top has been attached to the sides:

It's coming together!

Default delays

It's been a while since the last update. The Maton APPro pickup never arrived, and turned out it was never shipped. A few frantic calls later, after apologies from the Maton dealer in Australia, the pickup finally shipped yesterday.

In the meantime there wasn't much to do. Christian wants to install the pickup before he closes the box. He did do a little work on the neck/headstock:

And he got the kerfing in:

That's it for now. Waiting on the pickup...

Default still waiting on the pickup

I'm learning patience with this build! Oh well.

The brass kauri leaf fret markers have been created and are inlaid on the side of the fret board. I think they will look awesome with the gold jescar frets!

The brass leaves are resined in:

Brass leaves finished:

Default It's been a bit

As you know Christian had the idea of inlaying a real Kauri leaf onto the 12th fret. He went out and collected some leaves from the base of Tane Mahuta (Lord of the forest) the largest and oldest tree Kauri tree in New Zealand. Estimated to be around 2000 years old. It stands 51.2 meters tall, girth 13.77m

Default A little more progress

The saddle part of the AP5Pro is ready:

A notch has to be cut thru the sound board. I didn't know this was going to happen, but I figure if thousands of Matons have it then it's not a bad thing!

The pick up is finished!

Last - Christian and I were thinking about the arm rest, and the fact that it didn't have the same shapes as the end of the fret board and the bridge. So Christian started modifying it, giving it a swoop and the ends will be shaped to have the same flair as the fret board.

Default more progress

Christian is carving the neck, I've given him the measurements from my favorite neck (Webber OM) and he is carving it to match.
